Hey guyz,

I recently purchased a Henry Golden Boy in .22LR. I have had her out for a test drive and I am very impressed. I found the standard buck horn sights a bit tricky but it was the first time I used iron sights like this. I have started to get the trick, however do any of you out there in gun nutz land have any experience with other iron sights, and if so why do you prefer them? I am still considering a scope, makes it less traditional looking but this rifle is accurate as heck and could potential benefit from some glass??

Any thoughts?

Nate

It could benefit from a scope but for me I have other scoped 22's so wanted irons. If I were using it as a game-getter for gophers, rabbits, squirrels, or whatever I would definitely put a scope on it.
I kept the buckhorn sights on it to keep it somewhat "traditional" in function but I absolutely love Skinner peep sights on two Marlin lever rifles I have. They are a huge upgrade to buckhorn or semi-buckhorn sights. Having both an 1894 and 1895 with peep sights also influenced me to keep the buckhown sights on my Henry as something different since, for me, the Henry is just a fun-gun, not for much practical use.

The comb of the stock is already quite low on the GB. Adding a scope will raise the sight line you need to use and make it hard to even put your chin on the stock let alone a cheek weld as is normally optimum.

If you don't like the rear sight I'd suggest a tang mounted rear peep sight. It's a lot more traditional for a lever gun and it give fuzzy eyes a boost. Not as much as a scope but enough to get by usually.

Skinner sights makes a rear peep sight that clamps onto the top scope rail. Needs a higher front sight that they also sell. Would likely be less expensive than a tang sight which are fairly pricey from what I've seen.

*edit*
The Marble Arms tang sight is only US$126 at Bownells; that's much better than many tang sights I've seen.

The GB in my cabinet doesn't have the scope rail LUTNIT mentions….but is does have a Skinner peep sight that replaced the buckhorn.
I agree with BCRider against scoping a GB unless you prefer a chin hold.

Ah, I have the H001. It looks blued but it's powder coated black. I thought it was the same as the GB but just in a different colour; I didn't realize the GB didn't have the rail built into the receiver cover, my bad.

I put a Lyman globe front sight and a reproduction winchester ladder sight (that I bought off eBay) on the back. I never liked the original front sight.

Skinner dovetail...works and looks classy!

Another happy Skinner customer

Hey Nate.
Another vote for the Skinner receiver mount. I got the black-gold version a love it. Looks good, easy to install and accurate even with my aging eyes. I ordered the taller front sight but still use the beaded original and hold the bead a bit high in the aperture. Don't forget a blanking plate for the dovetail and a smaller aperture if your a target shooter. Good luck. Roy

Just put a few hundred more rounds though The GB this weekend, still finding that buckhorn a tad tricky....thanks for all the tips! Looks like I have to shoot more to figure out what way I want to go, shucks :)

Question~where (in Canada) can you get Skinner sights for a Henry? Is receiver mounting better than dovetail mounting? Pros/cons? I know a higher front sight is required for the Henry if you receiver-mount. Intended use~plinking in Ontario, MAYBE 50 yard gopher shots one day.

Yeah...I'm a dreamer... :)
