Best loads for .30-30

Hey guys, I've got a pre-64 model 94 winchester, 20" barrel in .30-30, curious to know what, in your experiences are the best loads for it, for multi purpose, plinking, max loads, and maybe even a varmint load? thanks
 
all time best powder is reloder 15 hands down. plinking load is 36 grains R15 under a 125 g sierra HP. Buisness load is 32.8 g R15 under a 170g sierra prohunter

most sabot rounds are very disappointing indeed-terrible accuracy - the only thing is they make a hyper vel 22 out of a 30 cal- and there's no savings on the bullets either

If you're not reloading, you'll have to try a box of as many brands and bullet weights as you can to find he ammo your rifle shoots best. The price of said ammo means nothing. Try 170 grain ammo first.
"...have some 224 sabots..." Don't waste your time. They're notoriously inaccurate.
 
Cast 165gr bullets from Bullet Barn with 6 grains of unique has been the cheapest and most accurate load for plinking. I have used as high as 12 grains of unique for full power loads with some jacketed soft points of various brands. Now I am shooting some Barry's plated flat point bullets with 10 grains of Unique with good results. The 6 grains of unique has shot a couple groundhogs without any significant explosion of red mist. I would bet they would be a good bet for grouse or rabbits.

well it's a referral to the powder thats worked the best for me. and according to literature it definately has the best velocity for the pressure. 36 grains will propell a 150 grain bullet at 2450fps from a 22" barrel. 34 grains will push a 170 grainer at 2335fps... the little 125 grainers go roughly 27-2800fps with 37 grains R15.
and all those loads give me 1.5" 100m groups with a peepsight.
 
I'm with you on the 3031 IMR I shoot a 150 gr' bullet with about 28.5 gr. I think that pushes it around 2100 F.P.S. I'm too lazy to look it up but itworks well for me.
 
Varmint load courtesy of Ken Water's "Pet Loads":
27.2 grains IMR 4198 over any M1 carbine bullet of 110 grain weight. Velocity about 2650 fps.
Very accurate from my Winchester carbine @100 yards. However it was about two inches higher than my sights set for the factory 150 grain bullet.
Three shots into 1.5 inches. Very mild recoil, great for introducing novice shooters to " high powered rifles."
Be warned though, if one is using FMJs for target shooting, it's a better idea to single load them directly into the chamber, one at a time.

loading sabot's a waste of time? I have never found any time at the range or reloading room to be a waste of time. I just gotta tinker, who knows I may be one of the lucky ones that finds the "majic\" that works. I like the 30 gr of 3031 over 170 for the go to load. Matches what the rifle was made for.
 
32gr 3031, WLR primer, 170 grain bullet, whatever cases i have. this = 2150-2200 fps depending on the brand of brass.
 
I've just started tinkering with a plinking load for my 30/30. So far a 113 grain flat nose cast bullet with 6-7 grains Unique. Haven't tried it with gas checks yet. Had my nephew popping balloons @100 meters with these loads....a little bark and no recoil to speak of. Probably best used for 25-75 meter shooting.
 
Using Alliant's max load for R15, under a 170 grain Hornady interlock, I got my best group, a true 3/4" group. Yes, a one off, but spectacular for a 20" carbine none the less.
It's a very hot load in my rifle. I was just playing with it, and have yet to get back to see if I can work up an accurate load with less pain on the old rifle.
I went to look up the load, but they have pulled it from their site. I don't have access to my records right now, so that will wait.

H4895, W760, W748, R7, BL-C(2) and H4198 have all worked well for me in the past.
 
I favor the 170s, decent energy up to 150 yards for any medium size game or protection. There is not much use or savings in shooting light girlie rounds. 30.30 is a cannonball no matter how you slice it, and it has little aerodynamic design, but very good bush gun on the other side of the coin. I don't see how any adult can have issues with recoil differences between 125 to 170 grain shots.
