best long range gun

How much shooting and reloading have you done? that will have a lot to do with what caliber you choose. I shoot my 22LR's more than any other rifle I have and I have had few. I would just hate to see you get a rifle and not be able to use it a lot.
I would say a 338 pick your poison, would be an excellent long range caliber but like Outbound said "economical" and "Long range" don't really go together.

Thanks gunnutz, I really like what I've read about the 6.5 x 55 but too hard to find ammo for it in my town and the .338 is a little too expensive. Currently I use tikka 30-06 for long range (300 Meter). I would like to start 500 meter and 1000 meter and was thinking about buying a Browning X-bolt 300 Win Mag. Has anyone used the 300 win mag for 1000meter and were you happy with the results?
I have seen thousands of long range target and F Class rifles, but only one was built on a Browning action. You don't need a .300 win mag to shoot that far, believe it or not a fast twist .223 with 75-80 gr bullets will make the trip. There are better calibers.

Thanks maynard, I just started reloading and want to master that art before I shoot competetivly. I live in SW Ontario and the club I belong to has a 300 meter. It probably will take me some time before I'm good enough to start shooting 500 meter to 1 km but I love the sport and I'm putting time into it. The reason I was thinking to buy a 300 win mag was I could use the rifle for moose hunting aswell, would you recommend that I get something else. Do you think the 6.5 x 55 would better suit my requirements for long range competition as well as a moose gun. Can you recommend any clubs in SW Ontario with 500 meter to 1 km ranges that I can go to?

handcannon70, There are 2 miliatry ranges near you, (within 1.5 hour drive) Cedar Springs and Winona however both are resticted to 400m. You can get access to these ranges on certian dates with an ORA membership. see www.ontariorifleassociation.org
In both cases the .300wm is not allowed due to the safety template.
The closest 1000 yard range is at CFB Borden, see the ORA link above and look into an Introductory Day or some of the winter program stuff if it is posted. You can shoot up to .50 cal at Borden.
For target rifle and F Class competitions 300 yards is as close as you get to the targets. 300 yards is considered "short range", 500-600 is "mid range" and 800,900 and 1000 are the long ranges.
The 6.5X55 is a good long range cartridge for target out to 1000 yards and will have no problem dropping a moose at hunting distances.

handcannon I own a 338wn mag and a 264wn mag which is a 6.5. If you are going to hunt moose the 6.5 is still a little small. for the smaller stuff like deer and antalope the 6.5 is great. But unless you want to empty your mag, or chase it for a while, the 6.5 is just 2 small to take down 1600 lb. bull wiith one shot.
My advice is the Remington 700 rifle in .308. The Remington is the rifle of choice for allot of military and police units and can be purchased for under $1000. Ammunition in .308 is great for long range shooting and is also easy to find and relatively inexpensive.
