Hi all,

This forum has been very helpful so far on a number of areas so thanks for that.

Like many, I have picked up some handguns due to the upcoming legislation. I wanted to canvas opinion on the best way to store handguns to prevent deterioration/rust.

Do folks store them in the original plastic box they come in or in some other way? Some boxes they come in just have a cheap plastic lining while others have a hard foam. Aftermarket cases often have that soft foam but I have heard issues about possible rust with those. Thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Wipe down with oil and store in a dry place. Throw in a desiccant pack and the plastic box is fine.

Best way to keep them in good shape is to use them.

For the one with the finish I'm trying to preserve, I add Renaissance wax before it goes into storage. Firearm goes into plastic bag, then goes into hard plastic case. Desiccant in the case. Foam doesn't touch the gun.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've decided to shoot, clean, oil/wax, and then store in those silica socks. Takes up less room in the gun safe as well that way.

Bore solvents are evaporatives; lubricating oil is for slippery things; grease and wax are better for blocking out the atmosphere.

I ordered a pack of 2000 silica gel packs back in the day. I'd always include one with everything I sold. Got a lot of them left and I just keep the bag open in the safe to eat up any moisture. Just make sure you keep everything lightly oiled. If you're storing them, just cycle through your collection and enjoy cleaning/re-lubing them every couple months to remind yourself of what you have and why you have them.

Obviously shoot what you want to shoot. If something sits for TOO long you might find something has developed an aging issue, so that's why I mention cycling through them. Fully disassemble. Check every spring and pin and contact point. As lots of people have said at other times in this forum - buy parts kits for each of your guns. I'm a big CZ P-10 fan, so I bought 2 sets of springs and pins from Tesro.
And yeah just stack the original pistol cases somewhere out of the way. They don't matter and just take up space.

Shoot them guns and clean em once in a while and keep em in a dry ventilated place, thats all u need unless its a collectors high valued pieces.
