Hey folks so I have my 10.5" upper coming this week.
It has a vortex style md on it now.

My question is that I suspect it will be loud as snot. Flash suppression for range use probably isn't a huge issue? Having your neighbour's cringing with every super sonic boom of a shot isn't cool either. I know we're at the shooting range but I still want to be nice.

What MD should I look at to lessen preceived sound or at least direct the noise down range. I have only ever used an A2 flash hider.

I have read a few posts online etc. The troy claymore seems like a good choice as do the s&j linear comps. The Flaming pig looks interesting but I'd like to avoid spending 200 bucks. That's a lot of ammo I'd rather be shooting.

I had a Rainier mini comp on my 12.5 and it was so loud I couldn't shoot it comfortably, the same brake/comp was fine on my 14.5 though. I tried an Allen Gunworks linear comp next and it was very pleasant to shoot on the 12.5, that one is now on my 6.5 to be tested tomorrow and the 12.5 has a PWS Triad which is also comfortable to shoot.
You're right, the shorter the barrel the louder they seem to be. It seems that for anything shorter than 14.5 stay away from anything with a brake function and stick to those with compensator only. Your tolerance may be higher than mine but since I don't compete where I need ultra fast follow-up shots and I don't find the recoil of 223 to be hard to control I now have the Rainier in the parts box and all my 223's wear compensators now.

The AG linear was $60 new :)
S&J also has theirs on sale (or they were last week) I bought one for my 300 Blackout barrel. Check the EE in the black rifle parts section for their ad.

Any short barrel is gonna be loud. If you wanna minimize that, don't get a brake or compensator. That will only make things worse. A flash hider or something like a Noveske KX-3 will at least not exacerbate the noise and blast. Stick with your vortex, I would say.

I have used a Claymore, pig and, if you can find one, a Dlask XB-1... they all do an excellent job of lessing concussion and sound on short AR's. Ive used a linear comp (like the AG and S&J) on my VZ 58 in7.62 and it was excellent. The Pig and XB-1 (nearly identical) almost eliminate flash. The linear comps don't lessen flash, they just direct it forward. I get some pretty impressive fireballs from my Claymore on my 11.5 AR.

Thanks got the info here.
I have a s&j bbl and bcg on its way so figured I would try their dimpled SLC as well. They were quick on responding to my emails so props to them in my books!
Good price and Canadian made.
Can't wait to get this all built up work is going to be painful the next two days coming home to that teasing notification hanging on the door lol
