I know we have a couple of sponsors that sell/make .22LR targets, but how good are they?

what other options are there to consider?

be nice to shoot something else that's reactive (moves) and not paper.

Not metal but there is no better reactive target than golf balls.

That said dueling trees and any of the flip-up types by Champion are fun for a while, available at CT and other places for fairly reasonable.

There is also Steel Challenge type targets, not reactive but they make a neat noise. if you are in Kelowna come up and give it a try if you have a semi auto.

what about the Xmetal targets?

Dueling Tree:

Spinners:

and

I'm wary of something like this as it seems to have a manual reset and you can't call a break every 6 shots to make the range safe for a reset:

my greatest concern is they're not cheap and nobody who's bought them has posted any reviews on their site... :p

You just tie a string to the reset arm and pull the string from the firing line:)

Those do look very nice but being made from AR400/500 they are very expensive for sure. My 1/4" mild steel Steel Challenge targets have had hundreds of hits now and hardly show any wear. Minuscule dimpling which is slowly work hardening the metal. I think they will outlast me and my ammo supply. Take a look for the Champion ones, I have 3 of theirs and they have all taken thousands of rounds and only needed minor repairs and they are about 1/4 the cost of the X-Metal. http://www.championtarget.com/default.aspx

I have used the Xmetal Rimfire Dueling Tree and it is awesome. Very well built and sturdy and obviously no need to go downrange to reset it.

I've had the $25 Birchwood Casey 5 paddle flip and then reset rimfire target for a couple of years now. The small 2'ish inch size paddles are small enough to make it a challenge at 25 yards for free standing and a good challenge at 50 and 100 yards with a scope and benched. It's nice that the paddles disappear and that last shot brings them all back again.

The small rimfire plate rack is pretty nice looking but it's larger, heavier and HELLISHLY more expensive. It also needs a strong back to the firing line. I think I prefer the BC setup with a final paddle that "resets" the rest just using gravity and a well aimed shot.

Just don't use .22Mag or .17HMR. Those drill holes through the cheap steel like a sharp drill.

well, I am looking at the CB options. they appear to be really 'low' to the ground, which is a bit of a turn-off. however, there is no mistaking they have a much friendlier price point. ;)

heyABb, even though it's made from serious steel, the .22LR has no problem flipping them side to side?

The targets flipped right over with a resounding 'thunk' using .22LR.

How heavy was it? Was it easy to set up and move around? They look like they weigh a ton.

Its pretty heavy, about 35lbs, a little awkward to move around by yourself, but with 2 people it would be a breeze. It's not mine, a friend bought it and he keeps it at our range and has given me permission to use it when I am there.

If you are worried about ricochets because they are low to the ground mine have had literally 10's of thousands of rounds at them and their predecessors plus golf balls, my tumbling steel groundhog target all the way to tin cans and I have never experienced a bullet coming back with any force. That isn't to say we haven't had a ricochet, the bullet whining off is some other direction, or one lobbing it's way back toward the firing line but never one coming back at the shooters with bad intentions. Of course we always wear eye protection when shooting these types of targets.

I just found the weight on their site, 33# for the tree and 48# for the plate rack. Not bad unless you have to carry it somewhere.

I'm guessing that "CB" is actually "BC" for Birchwood Casey?

If that's correct then how I use mine is to set them on the ground just in front of the raised berms at the range. Or even set into the front edge of the slope of the berm. That way misses and any ground skips due to the low height still end up inside the berm. Setting them in this way also makes it easier to see the small paddles as opposed to setting the target up on top of the berm and seeing the visual clutter behind.

I'm not sure I'm good enough a shot to place the Birchwood/Champion targets in the berm...it's a bit of a ways away, LOL!

I was thinking of what it would take to make post extensions I could set in the ground to place it within. of course that does 'add' complication. :p \

shooting downwards is a bit awkward and quite unnatural. at the range yesterday the guys were shooting bottles set up on some plastic barrels and because they were shooting downwards, some of the shots were skipping/ricocheting into the berm. was quite surprising to see!

found another supplier, Do-It-All sports. horrible website, but some cool products. :)

We shoot the Champion targets at 100 meters.
