Best mods for 10/22

Trigger 100%. I always upgrade the trigger on mine with at bare minimum Ruger's BX trigger (play with them in-store before you pay to find the best of the bunch) but there are better options out there. I also suggest upgrading the extractor as well as adding an extended charging handle and auto bolt release. Then of course depending on what type of build you have in mind, a new stock/chassis and barrel.

I don't get why 10/22s get so much hate. Sure, they're nothing special coming in the stock configuration from the factory, but you can pretty much customize them any way you want, and after upgrades it can compete with other rifles in the price range that the upgrades cost you.

The customization is the biggest selling point for me. I got two dressed up like ARs, one in a PDW-style with Hera CQR furniture, another one like an AK-74u, yet another in-progress that I plan to do as a shorty "golden gun" with burnt bronze cerakote, as well as a precision rig. Heck, I even want to try my hand at designing my own chassis for one. They're great little toys that's for sure.

Honestly for a 10/22 a rifle that can be built entirely from aftermarket parts by anyone who can build lego set it really isn't worth buying a ruger 10/22 then swapping out parts when you could have just bought those parts themselves instead. Buy a Dlask receiver and then buy the rest of the parts you want and build your own. If your going to replace the barrel and bolt and firing pin and springs and stock and bla bla bla just makes more sense to buy the parts you wanted in the first place. Once we get the AR back then you can do one of those for more fun :)

If your gong to upgrade an existing 10/22 a new kidd bolt or upgrade kit will increase reliability a ton for failure to fire or eject issues
A kidd trigger pack will increase accuracy and reliability
A new higher quality barrel will increase the accuracy noticeably
A better quality stock will increase accuracy and ergonomics

By now like I said you have basically built a new rifle so it makes more sense to buy the parts you want and that way you don't have extra parts laying around your not using.

When we get the AR back? Sorry I’m new, is this actually going to happen?

I just got into the 10/22 type build as well. Never owned a Ruger 10/22. Bought a Tacsol setup and worked off of that.

I bought a Kidd trigger only to find out it doesn't work with the chassis I was using. Manufacturer of the chassis warned me but I thought it was a Kidd so it should work. I was wrong.
Find out if a complete trigger pack will fit your chassis before you buy. As others have suggested, just buy the guts of the trigger and swap it into your stock trigger housing.

I've done the auto-release mod for the bolt. A bit tricky to get it just right, but Youtube is very helpful in finding the best geometry for filing and polishing.

Used a Dremel with small cutoff wheel then diamond files and finally Japanese water stones to trim and polish trigger and sear until arriving at a moderately light and very crisp strigger function.

Drilled and tapped 10-32 threads into the trigger itself and added a polished-tip grub screw to enable precise over-travel limitation so it's about 0.2mm after the bolt is released, not noticeable when shooting.

Rounded over the bottom-rear of the bolt and polished, smoothing out cycling for more reliable feeding. No FTE/FTF any more.

Polished various other internals, just generally smoothing out anything that slides against anything else.

A length of drill rod slipped snug into a matching length of high pressure 1/4" fuel line (orange transparent stuff, bought a coil of it at Home Depot for $10 or so) provides a very durable padded buffer with zero problems removing or re-installing for cleaning.

Made an aluminum mag release which is like a smaller scale trigger guard just ahead of the trigger, so dropping a mag is done by extending my trigger finger a little and giving it a poke. The tip is flush with the trigger guard so no chance of it getting hung up on anything accidentally.

Nice work Gerard!

The mag release was made by slicing about 1/2" off the end of a 1.375" diameter 0.65" wall 6061 aluminum tube then bending half of it out and hammering it around a rod to form an S curve. A bit of filing and sanding and refining of the curve and it fit nicely.

If your trying to up ur post count, do so in another form that you might actually know of what you speak. Ive shot comnpetitively for many years and havent seen one gun on the winners podium of what you speak. Apples to apples if you can relate. PS Ill put my modified 10/22 against ur Mosin at 100 yards for cash. Careful you dont bite off more than ur mosin can chew.

Is the bolt worth upgrading? If so, VQ or Kidd?

Yes the bolt is definately worth upgrading. If you compare the new bolt against the original youll quickly see many differences. The key parts are EDM wire cut and the machining is impecable and held too much higher tolerances. The firing pin in the KIDD bolt is pinned thru the bolt to keep it in the same place as it strikes the rim which is a huge improvenent over original. The heel of the bolt is also radiused for smoother cycling. The Volquartsen bolt is on a completely different level but expensive. It has all the advantages but then some. The firing pin is Titanium and travels thru the bolt for perfect rim strike every time. The bolt also has a handle thats threaded into the bolt which eliminates the bridged design of the Kidd and original Ruger, which in turn reduces friction on the top of the receiver which translates to reliability. Both are great improvements and dependant on ur goals. The KIDD is more than adequate for most but if its the best you seek the the VOLQUARTSEN is the deal. On another note the KIDD triggers have no equal and Ive owned them all. Ask anyone whose used a KIDD single or two stage and youll quickly surmise there is no better, but at a cost like most things in life.

lol...over rated trash? This is coming from a guy who would buy a Norinco if money was no object? To tell you the truth I'm OK with that, whatever floats your boat man but don't be going around trash talking legends such as the 10/22. You seem to have some zero valuable information to share in any of your posts on this forum. Its people like you who are slowly eroding away the integrity of this great forum and the world in general. Just shut the f**k up. I like all guns, cheap, expensive, rimfire, centerfire, handguns, AR's shotguns, air rifles I own them and shoot them all mostly just for fun as I dont hunt much anymore and I can certainly tell you that I have put thousands upon thousands of rounds through my various 10/22's over the years and they are far from trash.

Great suggestions from everyone here for upgrades, I've always wanted to do some work on mine but just haven't gotten around to it.
