To start with, We fought World War ONE with NOTHING BUT low number Springfields!
As for York using a M1917, there is debate to this day about that. Certainly his unit was issued M1917's but his son said that York told him he used an 03 that he got somewhere. I doubt if that the truth will ever be known about that.

Exactly, it's unlikely that any of the high number rifles ever made it across the pond. The majority of US troops in France were actually equipped with Model 1917 Enfields, a remarkable production achievement in a very short period of time.
