I searched and came up empty handed. If anyone knows of a previous thread please link.

I have been unable to come up with the answer to this question: What is the best crown for the muzzle?? 11 deg? recessed? rounded? other?

Info related to the rifle itself:

- .308 with a 22" heavy contour barrel.
- shooting (eventually) up to 800-1000yds
- shooting off a bipod in prone.
- well taken care of, no true "field" applications, just the range

Are there any distinct advantages to any crowns over others for this type of rifle/shooting?

The best crown is one that is cut concentric to the bore and is burr free.

You would be hard pressed to determine if one style is more accurate than another...

I have always used a flat recessed crown with good results , but a few weeks ago I had a conversation with Dave Kiff at PTG and he told me he had a new tool for cutting an 11 degree crown.

He told me a guy he knows tested it for him using existing rifles that shot well and recrowning with his tool ,all the tests showed better grouping with the 11 degree crown some of the tests showed grouping half the size.

Like guntech said though a concentric crown is the only one that works good.

thanks, concentric to the bore makes obvious sense. I just wasn't sure if the different designs served different purposes. It seems like the difference is mostly aesthetic, other than I can see the recessed providing a little more protection. I like the recessed and the 11 degree but I think I would lean towards the 11 degree.

That is the best Answer!
Doesn't matter if is 11 or 13 or even 45degree, as long as it Perfectly concentric all around.

I saw a pic of one similar to this one once but it looked like it went back about an inch or so into the barrel. Would it change the muzzle report much?

Probally .200" recess!
Look like the black piece is a thread protector!

Completely open and recessed an inch would not change the report enough to worry about it. It may be slightly different for the shooter more than anyone else.

That's kind of what I was thinking. A wee it quieter or not as 'sharp' might be nice on some varmint rifles.
