I'm look at getting a cheap semi-auto .22 but I'm not sure which one to get. I require something that is light weight, the lighter it is the better, and it must be no more than 175 bucks. I would also prefer a removable clip, not a tube mag. I've narrowed it down to the Marlin 795 or the Remington 597. I would also consider the Savage 64G if it far surpasses the other two but I can't quite justify the cost of a 10/22. I'll be using it to teach a new shooter who finds my jw-25 too heavy and doesn't want a bolt action so I'd like something that won't give me a lot of trouble. I'd also like it to be new and purchased locally so that narrows my options to S.I.R. and Wholesale. Any imput would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

BesT Picks for $175.00= Win 77 or Rem 66 or Ruger 10-22

In this price range the best made and most accurate and reliable .22LR repeaters in semi auto would be either a Win 77 self loader or a Rem 66.
The latter was used in setting a shooting record of firing at a 175,000 wood blocks in the air during a 1950's shooting exhibition.
Frequently these two rifles 45 or so years old appear in the $150 or $175 price range. You might also find a Ruger 10-22 in this range eh!

Damn, that was just what I was thinking. But of course they are not easily available and both are tube mags.
Win 77's are usually dirt cheap, mine was $75, a great shooter.

I have a Marlin 7000 which is the heavy barrel version of the 795 and I love it. It uses the same action and trigger as the 795 and it shoots anything I put through it and the trigger isnt too bad. I have no experience with the 597 but have heard that they can be very picky of what ammo it likes. Cant go wrong with the Marlin.

I too am new to Marlin but I love my Model 7000. I believe that the Model 795 is pretty much the same thing, albeit with a light sporter barrel. Take your pick.

Go with the Marlin 795 or 7000, walk-no.. RUN from the Savage line. Mine ruined the cheapo alloy mag in less than 2000rds and was a nightmare until I sold it. After numerous returns to Lakefield factory even they couldn't fix the POS!!

Used Cooey 64s (with metal magazines) are as common as lying liberals. Mossbergs are also excellent rifles at cheap prices.

The Marlin 795 is $149.95 @ wholesale sports.
