best of the old mossbergs

I was looking at an old mossberg the other day-not exactly which model, 42?but it had the dogleg bolt and was shorter than usual-looked like a carbine model.It had a box magazine and the fold down forarm too.
I'd be interested in knowing which of the older models were the most accurate
 
the fold down arm comes in the model 52 and 142A series. I have a model 152 dating 1949. the first number in front of the 52 dates the guns. series 252 and 352 series are dated more recent. These 152 series are semi autos not bolt actions but 142As were made the same fold downs. They are dated 1949-1957.


As for more accurate...I can testify that the longer barrels give a longer sight picture and I use my 151s in the gopher fields out to 150-200 yards with a scope. the 50 yard shooters seem to prefer the longer barrels also. the 42 series are much more sought after as they were built as target rifles c/w peepsights. and I will not argue that they are as claimed. But they make a great plinker also.

I have a 29c single shot mossberg and it's crazy accurate. If that thing had a magazine it'd be my favourite .22lr rifle. I paid like $60 bucks for it and 3 people have offered me more for it in the last 3 months. Hold onto your old Mossbergs!
 
I love the full wood Mossys and have a flat back variant model 51 as well as a model 151M and 151M(a)..the 152 has been relinquished to my son.
Marlin in the same years produced a great variety of target rifles and I constantly use a couple model 81s..flawless even at 200 yards with their 24" barrels. These old girls are certainly coming into their own now.

I had a 42B (b). Sold it on EE ONLY because it never got used.
Great rifle!! Very accurate!......Kinda regret selling it sometimes. :(

I love the older Mossbergs!! I have quite a few of the ones I favor. As a young lad, I owned a 151M(a) that I must have poured 100,000 rounds through before some unnoticed obstruction caused a bulge in the barrel, ruining it's accuracy. Always pined for a replacement. At present, I have 3 - 151M rifles, an a, b & c. I also have 2 - 142M's and 2 - 146b's. Add to that a 152 and a 351k.....you get the picture! The 146b models are true sleepers. Long tube magazine under the barrel, not really beauties to the eyes, but shoot they do! I have humbled several wannabees at the range with one of these old gems, just to make the uninformed person eat his snide comments about the "ugly old piece of s*** 22 rifle." These rifles can usually be bought for decent prices, and are often worth more, in my opinion, than they demand. Regards, Eagleye.
 
Would love to find a 144LSB. I would add one to my collection in a heartbeat. Availability seems to be pretty much non existent. The only one I know of sold in an Alberta Auction.
