Hey all.

Thinking about getting an AR with the intention of putting a Nightforce 3.5X10 on it. For a semi auto (semi) precision rifle.

What do you guys recommend?

Of course being a range gun will limit its distance, but......................

Also been having rude thoughts about a LMT in 308.

Decisions..........................:(

If you are going to buy a factory gun there are a few options (RRA to Noveske), but ultimately, if you have a good barrel and a lll the other parts are of moderately good quality and assembled properly, you should be able to get 0.5" to 1.0" consistently. I'd recommend a 16", or 18" stainless barrel. My favourites for accuracy have been Noveske #1, or White Oak Armament #2. I have yet to shoot a more accurate barrel then my 18" SS Noveske. JP makes great stuff too, and would probably give Noveske a solid run for your money, but they are the most expensive and hard to come by. CRAFM has a few, as does Phoenix in Edmonton.

I've also owned a LMT MWS and it was probably the nicest AR I've owned (But heavy), and yes I've owned KAC, Noveske, LMT, Colt, Armalit, DD, etc. The MWS was super accurate, even with the 16" CL barrel. Only problem is that the gun shoots so well, that you'll have no problem going through box after box of ammo. That equates to serious dollar bills, when shooting match grade .308 at $2 a shot. If your just shooting paper, and nothing past 300-500 yes, then buy the .223.

I have a LMT 16" upper with a DD free float fore end, which I had a.................don't laugh................a NF 5.5-22X56 sitting on top of the the upper in NF rings.

The lower has a RRA 2 stage match trigger. With developed match component reloads, I was able to reach out accurately, with .75 - 1.0 moa at 200 yards. I never got to try pushing it out further as my range only has a 200 max, but I am quite certain it would be very capable at much longer ranges.

I have recently been drawn to the shorter barrel, closer range AR addiction, so l and now reach out with a .223 bolt gun to play the 'tight' group moa game.

I see you seem to come back to Ontario, if you are in the GTA and want to try out the LMT upper, you are welcome to borrow it as it is just sitting in my safe.

Shoot me a pm if you want.

Merry Christmas to all my fellow CGN members, families and friends.

My JP Enterprises with 20" barrel does sub MOA with factory Hornady steel match ammo.
with 75gr steel match I was able to get a best group of 3/4" at 300 meters, but that was a one off.
Typically my shooting is around 2-2.5" at 300 meters
The rifle is capable though.

Oh, and this is after using it for 2 seasons of 3gun competitions where the barrel gets very hot, very quick.
Awesome rifle.

Here's a pic of my reach out and touch paper AR15 I built.

Heres a link to my build thread about it.

It really all depends on range and type of shooting you intend on doing.
That said,
3.5x10 Nightforce? - I assume you mean the 2.5x10? Or 3.5x15? Depending on your application, they are both excellent scopes.
Building an accurate AR is really quite simple. You need an accurate barrel fed with accurate ammo, and arguably a fantastic trigger.

The barrel is best provided by one of the premium quality barrel makers (get it from the source - there is no need to go through Noveski or other Branded AR makers), Lilja, Krieger, Rock Creek, etc. that are known performers.

Gieselle triggers are arguably one of the best out there - I prefer the adjustable SR triggers which are more money than the SSE

As for ammo, get the best you can afford - hand loading is an excellent option.

Questar has a RRA Varmint in stock for a reasonable price. Even better on Sunday when it is 20% off! I used to have one, and it was 1/2 MOA capable with ammo it liked.

I have a Noveske Recon w/ 16" stainless and it is super accurate. Shooting off bags without a bipod I have got groups just over half inch at 100 yards, with a bipod I could do better. Noveske stainless barrels are the most accurate and best factory barrels you can buy. Gettting a custom one built might have a slight advantage, but not much if any.

The most cost effective would be the DPMS recon in 223. It's not going to win you any brand snob rights but it looks pretty good.

If going for LMT then only look at the MRP (5.56) and the MWS (308). Both are very nice. I have a SS Mike Rock 1:8 twist barrel on my 5.56 version.

Noveske and the others mentioned are also good but expensive options.

For a target rifle I went with a Stag 6R. 1/2 moa guarantee. Haven't tested it out yet. Just added a PRS to it and need to take a scope from another project.

Armtac for a noveske barreled build.
Phoenix gun range in edmonton has jp's in stock. The mws is cheaper than those though...

Local shop showed me a Smith & Wesson VTAC today.

Would be alright for courses, but for the purpose I want, don't think it would do.

Who sells the JP and Noveske's in Canada. CRAFM doesn't have anything listed. Questar has a PWS that caught my attention.

Been thinking it over a bit more. I don't think for that magnification you want a Reece/Recon rifle. I'm thinking designated marksman instead.

Which brings me to the other AR addiction. The 308 AR!! Lots of recent threads. LMT MWS is very nice. Armalite SASS, DPMS REPRE are other options.

No point wasting a good NF scope!!

I have a 2-8x Leupold on my Recon and I love it. I like having a bit extra magnification even just at 100m and if you do some of your own reloads you can actually stretch the 223 pretty far. If you watch the EE some Noveske barrels pop up for sale fairly often. Whether you are doing a custom build or factory rifle a Noveske barrel is a very good option. It really depends how much you want to spend though, the common denominator with everything gun related.
