I'm an older guy, eyes need scopes for any long distance so here I am with a really nice Black Forge AR with Magpul furniture...an excellent rifle btw and I put a Leupold 3-9x40 with a Pepr mount on it and it seemed really good...But I kinda felt that for anything inside a hundred yards it didn't really feel right to me...I took it off...I have a nice Mbus on it and it seems really good in the house so far...haven't taken it to the range like this yet...But I'm now thinking about a red dot or other reflex type optic, something that will put me on target immediately within 50 to 75 yards...Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated...I'm looking at any ideas...

I'm not young either, but with Bushnell TRS-25 I can reach the 8" plates up to 200 yards with no problem. It's pretty damn quick up close too and the best part is the price. $125 will get you there. Now, I have experience with Eotech holographic sights as well and prefer them over Bushnell...but only within 25-30 yards. Beyond that distance I'll take Bushnell over Eotech. Everybody is different though, but I'm not the only within the group of people I work with who shares the same sentiment. For the price, it's hard to beat TRS-25. It's small, light, rugged and fits onto Aimpoint micro mounts.

Hey Nestor, how are you, we've done business together...Nice to talk to you again..Yep I agree that the Trs25 is an alright optic but I had a hard time with the big hunk of glue on the front right side of the optic lol...I sold mine...I'm looking for something a little more professional...up to maybe 600.00 bucks... But again...I kinda like the mbus so far but I haven't had it out to the range...Is an eotech or whatever going to give me a quicker acquisition and shot then the irons from 25 to 75? Just wondering...I'm a neophyte at this and I'm liking the AR but if I cant be happy running around with it, plodding in my case then I might just go with another bolt 5.56/223... I dunno..

Howdy Buddy,
just remember that the less expensive Aimpoints are on the heavy side. When I'm running around with AR for more than 30 minutes I'm starting to appreciate...anything, but heavy. If you planning to do mostly bench, I would stick to the scope. Many people can't see s.$&t thru the red dot past 25 yards anyway. That's my case with Eotech and the magnifier makes it even worse. Good luck!

I would go with a Hi-Lux CMR 1-4 from Wolverine for $400, you won't find another scope out there with as much to offer until you break the $1000 mark. Great glass, great reticle, zero-stop turrets, illumination.
If your budget allows I would look at a Sightron 1-7, will give a little more mag for the longer shots and has true 1x for the close stuff. Fantastic glass, excellent turrets, a few reticles to pick from.
Both of these are perfect on a flat top AR sitting in a PEPR mount (both have 30mm tubes)

If you prefer a red dot you can't go wrong with an aimpoint or eotech for up close and a magnifier for the 100 yard or a little more shots. As mentioned earlier though be sure to look through one, I've heard of a few guys who's eyes just don't like them. If you have astigmatism you won't do well with one.

If your budget allows even more then the Elcan Specter DR can't be beat. It's a little heavy but it's durable and has fantastic glass.

Another +1 for the Aimpoint Pro. I use it on my 3 gun AR. We shoot anywhere from 25 yards to 200 yards. I think the price for what you get is hard to beat. I am looking to get the new Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 x when they are available. Not replace the aimpoint, but to have on a second riffle. Good luck. Let's us know what you decide on.

Hey guys thanks again for all of the feedback..I'm not going with a scope...I'm probably going to put a reflex on the AR and I think I'm going to go with an eotech red dot.
I want something light and that I can cowitness easily with my Mbus rear sight and reg front sight...If this doesn't work out for me I might just sell the AR and get a bolt in .223...

I have an eotech XPS 2-2 on my 9mm AR and it's great for 50 yards or less, if I throw the magnifier on I can actually hit stuff regularly at 100 as well. I can ring gongs at 100 without the magnifier but to shoot at paper i need it out there. My eyes aren't the greatest but it's a wonderful sight to use, fast target acuasition and nice wide field of view.
I wouldn't worry much about the co-witness crap. It's good for zeroing your red dot after you sight in with irons but it just clutters up the sight picture for no advantage. If you look through the irons when shooting you don't need a dot to show you where to hit and if you look through the red dot the sights are redundant.

Don't buy Bushnell, their best selling feature is their warranty. I've been quite disappointed with the last 2 of their products I've purchased and one was elite 6500 series so not the cheap stuff either, and I also shot an AR with the bushnell AR 1-4 a couple weeks ago and wasn't impressed.

Don't sell it, everyone needs an AR. Once you get out on the range with it you'll wonder how you've survived this long without one. Definitely my favorite platform. Too bad our stupid government has screwed us so bad with the restricted classification. I dream of the day I can take my AR shooting away from the range, unfortunately I think it's never going to be any more than a nice dream :(

Try a vortex strikefire, decent dot for the money... clearer dot than the sparc imho. Lifetime warranty and can be had for $200 on the EE. You can always upgrade later. Eotechs are the fastest but seem fuzzy...especially next to an Aimpoint. If you do go Aimpoint, choose a 2moa...it'll get you out further.

Get the Eotech, you won't regret it. I just got one (EXPS 2-2) and took it out to the range today and it was great. Super fast target acquisition. Like others have said, don't really worry about co-witnessing. I just used my front post to adjust the optic to be on paper and went from there. For what it's worth, my irons are zeroed for 25 & 300 and my Eotech (it has a 2 dot reticle) has the first dot zeroed at 50 and 200 and the 2nd for 500 (apparently, I'll try that when we can shoot long range again after this fire nonsense subsides). I was amazed at how much faster it was than the irons. Easily pinging steel out to 100yds. I've got a magnifier en route as well for further out.
