I have done some searchs here and Google, but I have not found the grip I am looking for to use with a Maverick 88.

I have seen the Houge Overmold Tamer Pistol Grip, and that looks good and at a good price. Anyone used one? How well does it work?

But I am sure I have seen another one, which I cannot find now.... looked almost like a S&W large frame revolver grip, made of rubber.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

These are on a Rem 870, but they should have them for the mossberg 500/590.

ive heard nothing but bad things about the Pachmayr - namely that it has very bad ergonomics and is painful to shoot.
ive heard nothing but good things about the Speedfeed Birdshead pistol grip, apparently the ergonomics on it are excellent.

I just put a Knoxx Breachersgrip on my 14" HP9 and it is amazing!!!
I was even shooting it one handed!!
It is definitely the only way to go for a pistol grip, highly recommended, I got it for 78$ on Ebay.

Thanks for the feedback on the Pachmayr... I was drawn to it because it LOOKS like a handgun grip, I thought that might be a more "natural" way to hold it for aiming over the barrel and using the bead.

There is a great hickok45 video on Youtube with him firing a Moss 500 and a speedfeed "type" grip. He is crazy accurate with that combo.

Diananike.... have you fired 2 handed, trying to aim it ( looking down the barrel )? If so, how well did that work for recoil?

The Knoxx sounds great, but at more cost and a what looks like 2 or 3 inches more length than the Houge ( at least it looks like 2 or 3 more inches that might hit your face! )

Thanks all for the info, very helpful... anyone else tried the Houge or Knoxx?

have you tried the choate style? theyre not bad, and more ergonomic by far than the stock mossberg pistol grip (which shreds your hands).
canada ammo sells clones of it for $10. would be a cheap place to start - if youve never fired a PGO shotgun before then this might be one of those things where you buy it, take it out to the range, and take it off as soon as you get back home :) in that case its best not to invest $70 in one.

ah nevermind - you have a mossy. i always assume everyone is using an 870 :D

With regards to the Knoxx Breachersgrip
As long as you hold your support arm straight out the gun has a fair distance to travel before it would hit you.
I have been shooting the gun by driving it out by pointing my support arm at the target till it's fully extended, while looking at the XS Big dot bead. And my tight single-point sling adds an extra stability in kind of a push-pull arrangement. Shots are fast, natural and recoil is fine with full power buckshot and reduced recoil slugs. Repeat shots obviously arent as fast as a full stock but you can still lay down some serious smack. It is quite easy to get fast hits on a Silhouette at 25yds.
We had a pretty good time loading it up with trap loads and seeing how quick we could empty it, Rob tapped himself in the face with the back of the grip once but it wasn't too painful, and I saw it coming as both his arms were bent
I haven't tried full power slugs yet but when I do I'll get back to you.

i have played with pistol grips on shotguns and made up a birds head grip for an 870 as i could not find one for sale . i found the birds head grip to be easier on the hand than other styles but i do not shoot a pistol grip shotgun with any authority or accuracy as i find they are intimidating with 12 guage loads in anything other than light loads.

Thanks for you very detailed review Diananike.

I am thinking that having a PGO Maverick it will end up between 27.5 and almost 30 inches, with the Knoxx. It is 26 inches with NO grip at all.

My main interest in this firearm is weight ( perhaps about 6 lbs PGO ), length ( maybe 28.5 with the Houge ), and having 5 rounds of 12 gauge ( I was planning to use the Federal PB127 DPRS, much harder (higher antimony) lead than the traditional TruBall, 1350 fps and 1775 foot pounds ) so not too hard kicking but hopefully effective on black bears. And using a 2 point sling also.

Also not too expensive, around $300 at most.

Anybody knows how much length the Knoxx and the Houge add to a base shotgun?

Thanks,
OKH

OAL w/18.5" BBL and factory Mossberg PGO is 28.5", Hogue should be similar. Reduced recoil slugs are great with PGO, noticeably less than magnum loads and usually penetrate deeper due to weight retention. That was with the Mossberg plastic grip so Hogue grips and others should be very easy to shoot. I need another PGO pump for quadding, theres no getting a cheek weld on a full stock with a helmet on. Diananike is dead on with PGO technique, nothing works better.

I put the Knoxx on my 14" and it's just over 26" so it was a no-brainer for me, but I can see how on a bigger gun it might kind of diminish your returns.

if you havent already bought the Maverick, IMHO look for a 12.5" or 8.5" Grizzly instead.
id much rather have a functional full stock than a bit more barrel length and a couple more rounds. at least here in Ontario you cant have more than 2 in the mag anyways in the bush - no clue what the BC laws are like.

both of these guns are the same length - just over 26", and i would much rather have the one with the full stock. its also lighter and nowhere near as unwieldy.

^^^ Love that super short barrel!

I have the choate pistol grip. It is very solid. But the shorter barrel and full stock is a much better idea

I think a 12.5" Ghost ring sighted grizzly would be the best choice for bear defence.
I put the Knoxx on my gun because I wanted to get it down to the shortest possible length and for what it is (PGO shotgun) it's the best I can imagine. However I would much rather have some sights and a stock if I had a bear around.
That being said I've had some run-ins with bears on fires this summer that even my PGO would have smoked them, that's one of the reasons I put it together. At some points they were making our lives a living hell. Not aggresive (usually) but just up in our s**t all the time.
I didn't have to buy a new gun and it fits in my dry-bag even if those COs won't go into my trunk and bring me my gun. Sure beats a Pulaski an axe or a deadfall trap....

Can a Blackhawk Knoxx BreachersGrip Pistol Grip be fitted to a Winchester model 1200? I cannot seem to get this answered thru Google searches.

I am thinking Win 1200 because I like the way the forarm is so long, and comes so far back ( I have short-ish arms )

OKH

They do make the breachersgrip for Winchester 1300/1200 series shotguns, I found a few on Amazon, but shipping was a real #####. Anyway, try amazon.
