As of this last week I now have a brand new 30-06. I want to get out to the range a bunch and put some trigger time in behind it. I'm looking for cheap ammo that goes bang. Something to help me learn the gun. When June comes around I'll find a quality hunting load that the gun likes best and I'll be set for black bear/deer/ etc. for spring and fall.

After checking around, here's the lowest prices I've found so far.

Federal PowerShok at CdnTire for $20 plus tax a box.
Winchester PowerPoint for $18 a box at Walmart.
Federal PowerShok at Wholesale sports for $14 a box plus one tax and shipping.
Federal PowerShok at SIR for $13 a box plus one tax and shipping.

The local gun shop here had the same box of PowerShok at $30 for a box. I do buy from them when I can because they have items that you can't find elsewhere, but I won't pay over twice as much for ammo.

When I queue up and order through wholesale it just gives me the $11.95 shipping charge through canada post, but it's gotta be more than that.

Does anyone here have experience with buying ammo from Wholesale Sports or SIR through mailorder? What kind of shipping charges would I expect on say 10 boxes of ammo? Is it still cheaper after getting it shipped or do I just look to the local canadian tire and walmart.

EDIT: I'm in the lower mainland of BC. about an hour outside of Vancouver.

So what do I do?

I just put an order for 300 WSM through SIR.

I have no problems ordering ammo through them. Usually, in the $200/order range. The delivery charge is close to what I would pay for PST in Ontario, so it all evens out.

Helps if there is somone home to receive the shipment, which is sent by courier. I work from home so am here most of the time.

:)

I'm in the exact same boat as you except I live IN Vancouver. I just bought a new 30-06 and was wondering where I should buy my ammo from. You could just e-mail S.I.R. but form my experience it takes about a week for them to answer. Let me know what you do.

At about $1 a round it's not exactly meant for target shooting, it's ment for hunting. I too have a rifle in 30-06 and just buy Winchester in 165gr at Walmart. Just get 2-3-4 boxes and hit the range, get ready for sore shoulder :D

The goal here isn't shooting targets, the goal is to practice enough to hit what I'm hunting when the time comes. Targets are just the easiest way of measuring my performance.

I just applied today to join the EE group. I haven't been accepted yet though.

Does anyone have experience with the shipping from SIR or Wholesale? I'm going to call them tomorrow, but I can't honestly say that I trust the answers I get over the phone from either of the stores.

Why wouldn't you trust them. What would they lie to you about? I'm pretty sure there are lots of happy customers that mail ordered from both those store. The deal at Italian sounds pretty good too.

Just talked to wholesale sports. Shipping costs to BC are $16 dangerous goods fee plus $10 shipping for up to 10 pounds + $.17 per pound above 10.
So for 10 boxes of ammo that would probably work out to about $30 in shipping, which is $3 a box. The 0% PST saves me $1 a box, so that brings the price to about $17 a box taxes and shipping in from wholesale.

Lever Arms in Vancouver has it for $16.75 a box taxes in.

just go and buy some goddam ammo,

in the end being cheap doesn't save you anything, it cost you time

I get my brother to glass bed guns for fellows and I lap rings and instale scopes, and fire test at 100 yards
I have found the Power points by Winchester shoot extreemly well, sub 1" in any quality gun with a decent trigger, in .270, & 30.06 (165gr)
I paid $16.97 at Lebarons in Ottawa

There is no DG fee for ammo.

Saw federal 'power shok' 30-06 for 10.25 a box in Wally World in Bellingham this morning....Not that it matters much it may as well be on the moon:mad:

I would check Wal-mart and Canadian tire in your area and start saving your Canadian tire money. Or if you plan to be hunting and shooting regularly pick up a Lee-Loader kit from S.I.R. for 21$ and make your own.Reloading is Always the answer when it comes to ammo.

RE: Wholesale Sports

I haven't had a problem with SIR yet but the skloons at Wholesale Sports gun counter have lied to ME for the last time!
Whether they lie because of incompetence or for any other reason is irrelevant. They lie.
I spent 4700+ dollars there in 2007 and they STILL try to feed me BS.
I will spend my money elsewhere from here on and I will spend it at places that give me CORRECT information. I guess I'll
be doing a lot of mailorder. Wholesale Don't-Got-It
can bite me!
