Thinking about trying a black powder rifle, maybe a .50 cal percussion.not sure if I'm gonna stick with it, so I don't want to put out a lot of money to start with.I'm just wondering where a good place to buy one is.thank you for any recommendations.

Do you want a "traditional" style rifle? Wholesale sports has new Lymans from $560 to $670.

Ellwood Epps sometimes has good used muzzleloaders.

The EE here on the Forum often has some good deals.

Check out Marstar and Shooters Choice in Kitchener Waterloo, Ontario.
They sell Pedersoli's, both Military and Civilian style traditional Black Powder firearms. Pistols and long guns.

If you can wait-the Calgary gun show is your best bet if you are close. Saw T/C Hawkens last year at 375- and could be negotiated down. Usually a fair number of pieces looking for a good home. Later on move on up to whatever pleases you but this would be a good place to start. Cheers

If you are shoppping online, I would recommend Shooters Choice.

Look at the EE Forum here on CGN!!

I agree. If one does your homework in checking out a seller's trader rating & perhaps even PMs one or two people who transacted with the seller, one could do a whole lot worse IMO.

All of my blackpowder firearm purchases were very successful here; a Browning made Hawken type percussion rifle, one flintlock smoothbore & the Ruger Old Army revolver.

I highly recommend you check out Kimball Arms. He is in Oshawa, Ontario and is a huge step above a production rifle. His work is outstanding. I have a 54 caliber flintlock he made and couldn’t be happier.

Your first step should be visiting a local black powder group at a gun range near you and visit with them a bit and see what you like. They will most certainly let you take a round or two to try and get the feel of things. You should consider a time period and or place and time in History that may interest you as MLs vary in style and looks depending the time period and place.
