My son's going on his first deer hunt in November and needs some gear....mainly clothing.
Where's a good "one-stop-shopping" store in Vancouver that sells decent stuff that won't break the bank? He's already had a look at Canadian Tire and Wal-Mart and agrees that they sell crap.

Depending upon what clothing he needs... camo stuff - try Reliable Gun and Tackle on Fraser street, or Italian Sporting goods on Renfew.

For good "ordinary" outdoor clothing, waterproof stuff, packs, etc, try Mountain co-op, 3 Vets, or Taiga works, etc on Broadway.

Good stuff is not going to be cheap, but it will last a lifetime.

 You cannot afford to buy the cheap stuff!

What kind of stuff does he need?

A set of good synthetic long underwear (top & bottom) a pair of wool or fleece pants (wool surplus pants are fine) and a fleece or wool top will take care of most huntng situations.

Add some gortex raingear in the pack, as well as a touque, a pair of gloves (again, wool or fleece, but I like those fingerless knit gloves with thinsulite, that have a flip over mitt. $6 at Walmart, and buy a new pair next year! ) and you are good to go.

You don't need to spend a ton of cash on new camo super gear. I spend alot of time hunting in a Stanfields sweater.

Camo really doesn't do much for you unless you're bird hunting, or maybe bow hunting. Washing your stuff in non-brightening cleaning products (like baking soda or a commercial phosphate and brightener-free product) is probably more important....

Stillwater sports in delta has some good stuff, and reliable has some (not great selection, but decent).

Three vets does have some camo, and a LOT of good non-camo stuff like quality wool pants. Prices are hit and miss - some good deals, some great deals, some not-so-great :) IT's definately a must-visit tho.

daves surplus in new west has a wide selection of stuff

Dave's Surplus Ltd
742 12th St
New Westminster, BC
V3L 1A1

There's also the surplus store with the gorilla in front on Broadway near Clark.

Some nice wool pants there sometimes. I've bought some West German camo there. I don't know if they still have them, but they had jackets, pants with cargo pockets and my favourite, a hooded parka with huge pockets. They are poly-cotton and can get wet and soaked, but for drier weather I like 'em.

Gatehouse is right. You don't need fancy ####. Army surplus wool pants and a Stanfield's sweater and you look just like a weathered stump in the slash as long as you don't move.

Probably no one best place for everything. Mountain co-op and the stores near it on Broadway worth looking at. Also Taiga and 3 Vets. Stillwater in Delta has some good camo fleece stuff.

Try Skyview Outdoors on Scott Road., beside McDonalds just after you come-off the Patullo Bridge. Good Prices and selection. You can get the same stuff as Mountain Equipment but you don't need a membership and they cater to hunting as well. You can custom order Wall tents and they have a limited selection of hunting clothing. AND IT'S MADE IN CANADA......aside from there, I would try Stillwater Sports, Dave's Surplus, And Hub sports in Abbotsford and don't discount the old favorite Army and Navy...sometimes you can find half decent gear for a good price there, albeit not often.

And another for Dave's surplus in New West. I got a wool jacket/shirt there for $15, and damned if that thing ain't so awesome I now wear it to work every day :) I guess I should get another for next year's hunting season so it isn't all stunk up from wearing it every day :)
