I have done many google searches and searches on here, but is wondering what most find the best book out there is for target shooting to gopher hunting. Some friends have suggested "Ultimate sniper for military and police". If that is best book, is the second edition all that better? I can get first edition for $50. second is $150. I don t mind buying more than one book. thanks

There isn't a best book imo

Check out Milcun for their books on
-mental marksmanship
-the wind book(phenomenal must read for a new to long distance shooter)

Brian Litz's applied ballistics books

A book called slings and things I can't remember who wrote it.

And another good read is German Salazar's blog called riflemens journal.

John Plaster's book is comic book cr@p compared to the references in keegs' post above.

The Rifleman's Journal no longer appears to be available; too bad since the information there was invaluable. I'll second the books and videos that Bryan Litz offers through Applied Ballistics, and add to it the book series on long range shooting/hunting and the web site information on wound ballistics by Nathan Foster. Magpul's long range rifle video is very good, and Accuracy 1st's Whiz Wheel is a good tool to add to your shooting bag. If military match interests you, the books and videos from Jim Owens at jarheadtop.com will be of interest, and if not, there is much information that is transferable to other shooting diciplines.

I wouldn't say not to buy Plaster's book, but it pales compared to those that are dedicated to long range shooting alone. Chapters dedicated to snipercraft like how to apply camouflage, building a hide, or crack-bang are interesting topics in their own right, but aren't pertinent to rifle shooting.

Look at "The Ultimate Optics Guide to Rifle Shooting"
If you want to learn how to use your scope and hit targets....this is the book.
Written by Vortex Optics Canada Tech field advisor. This guy is the real deal.
Best book that shows you how to make those crazy hard shots and figure out stuff that a ballistics calculator cannot do!
Check out Vortex website. it is for any scope but they sell it for a great price there. beats any book i have ever read on shooting

Use of the optics or sights is only one aspect of successful shooting.Establishing a training regimen and developing a successful preshot routine, proper trigger release and follow through, reading atmospheric conditions(wind, effects of changing light), load development, firearm maintenance and not least developing a mental toolbox - just one or two items that need to be addressed.
