Good afternoon all.

Im new to shooting, will be reloading for 45-70 Cartridge.

I will be purchasing a Marlin 1895 for a bush protection gun as well as hunting, I am aware you really need to reload with this particular cartridge to get the most out of it so I intend to do just that.

What would a good starter kit be? Note that im not looking to win any competitions and wont be going through 1000's of rounds for this gun so don't need a crazy expensive automated press that can turn out 1000's of rounds a hour. A manual press will be more than enough for my needs.

Thanks guys.

I like the RCBS Rockchucker kit myself. I bought about 35 years ago, and I still have no regrets with my choice. I think you're looking at about $400 for this one.

I have seen good things posted about that RCBS kit, and 35 years is a long time and I would love for me to purchase something hat will last that long. That said im having a hard time throwing down the $400 when the Lee kit is $150.

I know some people seem to think the Lee is cheap and not as good but then others love the thing, this is why im stuggling with the decision.

I bought the lee aniversary kit off EE years ago for $80 . If your just loading a bit of 45-70 it is a good kit . I use the powder thrower , but gut a hornady digital scale also . 45-70 is a fairly easy and forgiving caliber to reload .

For the first few years will be 45-70 only. Will get a long range gun in a few years likely .308win or bigger, but am willing to purchase a new press at that time if needed for better accuracy with the reloading.

The Lee presses and surprisingly, the powder throwers, are fine but I would not go with the kit. The scale sucks as well as the chamfer/deburr tool.

Buy the parts individually. You will spend a little more initially but avoid having to replace items and have a better starting point.

Under $200 - one of the Lee kits

Quite a bit over $200 - take your pick - they are all decent.

I'm cheap/poor and only load for my hunting rifles - I have a Lee Challenger kit :)

Just do yourself a favor and get the rock chucker supreme kit. You can get $ 50 back from rcbs via mail in rebate. Lee is cheaper and you can replace what don't like but why bother? Buy once, cry once. I have the rock chucker kit and reload 308, 223, and 45-70 with ease. I will add more luxury items as time goes on but every part of that kit is useful. Don't listen to the progressive suggestions right from the get go. Those are best served for high volume and generally cost more.

Pay a little more now...or alot later:popCorn:

Lee kit is fine but you will spend more money replacing the cheap stuff once you start loading. The press itself is the only good thing about the kit. The rest needs to go ....so listen to the rest of the sheep and spend once and cry once
