well I decided im going to upgrade my hunting/long range setup. my current rifle is a savage scout, which now I have it in use as a truck gun! im looking for something that I can use out to 800 yards and the price tag 1200 or under with the glass and the rifle. not sure what I can get for that price but im hoping I can get a lot for my money. if not I will most likely be getting a win 30-30. I will be mostly using it for hunting probably 500 and under, but when my buddies and I go shooting I want to be the guy that impresses them when shooting. likely i will not be shooting over 800 yards because I don't see a need to. I will be hunting deer, elk, moose, and black bear. one think I don't really want a 308 win because I already have 3 rifles in this caliber so I want to try something new.
thanks.

unfortunately your not going to get "alot for your money" with 1200 for rifle and scope. savage is offering very good out of the box rifles these days in terms of accuracy, while rem while still building great rifles seems to be a bt more hit or miss in terms of ending up with an average rifle or an excellent out of the box shooter. what do you own in terms of rifles now? a rebarrel migh give you better bang for buck if you have a decent action you can start off with. . but that alone will eat up a large part of your budget... if your main goal is to impress your buddies take that 1200 and buy a nice scope and some ammo and practice... a quality sporter weight barrel rifle isnt necessarily more accurate then a bull barrel target rifle , they just get hotter faster and can be a bit more finicky to find the right hand load for... best bang for buck if your set on getting another rifle... keep your eyes on the EE and hope something pops up as realistically a factory rifle shooting factory ammo inst going to leave your friends speechless unless sub MOA is a rare occurrence with them , but unless you end up with a miracle gun don't expect 1/2moa at 500+

IMHO Glass is going to be the limiting factor here - you want good glass and it'll throw the budget off. Put the $1200 into glass and reloading components for one of your current rifles in .308 or upgrade one of them.
the .308 is no slouch in LR shooting, esp with some hand loads.

not interested in in making any of my current rifles into long range guns. so I think I will have to ponder on the idea of one day having a long range rifle. I love very nice guns but im not interested in spending 2500 to 3000 into one gun that I will use sometime for hunting and the occasional target shooting with the boys. thanks for the help guys.

Savage Model 12 LRP in 260 and decent glass can be done under $2000. Will shoot the distances you mentioned with out breaking a sweat and will drop the animals you mentioned with a good bullet and proper placement. Probably the closest you will get for what you want. Good luck.

Savage FV in 22-250 at wholesale sports 609.00
McGowan SS barrel in 7mm-08 425.00
Burris sig zee rings 1" 45.00
any cheap bases 15.00
Sell 22-250 barrel to me -100.00
=994.00
This leaves you with 200.00 for a scope, if you keep an eye on the EE there are usually Bushnell 3200 10x tactical scopes to be had for right around that mark. I've owned them and other than the lack of mag they are a good scope with good tracking. If you go this route you will have a very accurate rifle with the right load and you can upgrade bits and pieces as time goes on.

i have a 700 SPS tac with a 20in barrel. i just found out that it can make multiple hits at 850 yards on 12in gong. took few shots but that's because i was using serveral different loads that all shot differently. when i bought it i put a decent bushnel tactical scope in 5x15, its actually really nice glass. it cost me just a shade over 1300 but it shoots nicely.
