****Best Rifle****

Corvette ZR-1, other's costing 2-3X as much still can't beat them in pure performance:D

WRONG, you forgot the ariel atom :) You can buy one for around 30grand and it will go 0-60 under 3 seconds, and that's the one with 300hp, they are building a v8 model ariel 500 with 500hp, with it weighing only around 500kg, you get over 1000 horsepower for every ton. Comparable with a formula f1 race car. Take a lookie, they ARE affordable and street legal :)

ps. I am a dodge viper fan, and corvette always bring out a tough competition  hehe

Back to the original post, I'd vote for a savage just because it's really the only big caliber hunting rifle that's the most worthy on any big game hunt in my safe. For around 500-600 bucks you get the rifle, with a 3200 elite scope upgrade, new rings, and with some beginner handloads (my first batch ever, just started) I got my first ever sub-moa groups few weeks ago without using a bipod or sandbag. Just a wobbly wooden block and sturdy shoulder in not the greatest weather conditions. I am thrilled and it is more than good enough for my needs, yet still on a budget. Great results for the 180gr 30-06 hunting bullets, with it being stock and all. But they do look very plain, synthetic black ugly stock with no fantastic visual features whatsoever. I'd rate it top pound for dollar value.

But if you can afford some more coinage, I'd vote a tikka t3 stainless steel silver bolt with a nice wooden stock top pound for pound. It's very accurate also, built very well and has a beautiful look the way a proper rifle should look like.

This is obviously something hunters think about a lot, I know I have. I hunt on the west coast VI, where it's very rugged, hilly, and wet. With that in mind, your biggest concerns are rust, sound, and things catching on your rifle. I must have looked at every rifle in production currently. I grew up firing Enfields, and must say they made me a bit of a rifle snob. The smooth bolt, peep sites, detachable magazine, and sheer knockdown power formed the basis of what I was looking for. If I could get a stainless sporterized Enfield in a common 30cal cartridge, I'd be in heaven. Unfortunately, you can't find that, so I went looking for the next best thing.

I found Remington offered the 700 line up, but I'll be damned if I could get one with a detachable magazine in short action stainless steel. The VTR was the closest I could get, but that wasn't quite my style. I looked at the browning, marlin, and mossberg setups and couldn't find anything that fit the bill. Sako had the A7, which I thought was nice, but I heard they were discontinuing it. They also offered the 85 and Finnlight, which fit the bill completely, but cost $1700+.

What I was looking for was:

Stainless steel.
Detachable magazine.
Fairly elegant looking.
$1k or less.
In short action, 308 preferably. Something common caliber, no magnums.
Smooth bolt, manual action.
Sub-MOA accuracy.
Less than 7lbs.
Barrel 22-24 inches w/ ROT capable of shooting 180g+ bullets (I reload)

Eventually this led me to the Savage line up. They offer the 16fcss weather warrior, which I checked out at WSS. I couldn't believe that for $699 you could get a pillar bedded, adjustable trigger in SS/DM. They don't seem to have fully stainless internals, which I was a little confused about, the Sako did. however. People complain about the stock on the savages, but when I compared it to the Sako, I didn't think it was that bad. The accuracy on these Savages are supposed to be on par with Rem700's, so that's decent. They don't have the 1moa or less guarantee like the Sako does, but I'm guessing that won't be a problem.

I do plan on picking out some decent iron sights to have installed. My only preference is that they don't catch on stuff like the Mauser sites seem to do.

To answer the OP's question, the perfect hunting rifle to me is a Finnlight or a Savage 16fcss. I'll probably grab a savage and install a 4-12x40mm scope.

EDIT: The newest Savage catalogue shows the Axis Edge XP in SS/DM. Comes with a Barska scope. Does anyone have experience with this rifle? It's $429.00, so I'm wondering where they cut corners. No Accustock or Accutrigger, but they do say it's dual pillar bedded. I looked at the stock on the old Axis models from 2009 and 2010, and I liked them. Does anyone have any experience with these rifles?

The best rifle and i would put it against anything is my Steyr Scout 308 a marvel of efficency, took black bear, deer caribou, elk, moose, coyote, etc... Never lost an animal that i hit with it... JP.

Older Husqvarna's.

Priced the same as current entry level rifles, real Mauser action, five rounds in the mag, honest, accurate, no bulls**t hunting rifles made of steel and wood and integrity.
