I am debating on the rings to use on a precision varmint rig.
Picatiny rail as base and NF 8-32x56 as scope. Interested in fixed rings to join both, not mounts, no QDs - need the room/space for ejection port & bolt handle.

Since I don't know better, I was going to fit NF steel fixed rings. My smith says I'm chucking good beer money away and suggest to fit Warne's Maxima tactical rings instead. He claims they are tougher, offer a more balanced grip, have more contact surface with the tube and are significantly cheaper.

Any comments on Warne rings? Should I stick to NF rings?
Thought and suggestions welcomed.

I don't think I threw any money away when I bought my NF rings. Currently running a set of NF 34 mm Ultralites on a 338 Lapua. I really like them. All my other ring sets are steel Badger Ordnance rings so I was somewhat concerned about switching to the aluminum/titanium Ultralites. The Ultralites have proven to be a solid setup and have met all my expectations. Yes, they're expensive, but if you look at it as an investment over time then the initial price is easier to swallow.

Sorry, I was too busy blabbing away and missed the part about you wanting steel rings! I have no experience with NF steel rings but haven't heard anyone complain about them. How much more are the NF steel rings vs the Warne rings?

Not sure for the NF 4 screws steel rings. The Warne Maxima Tactical rings (6 screws) are +/- $140. The titanium alloy NF A265 are +/- $220.

While the steel Warne appears to have a good reputation and do provide a decent saving, I'm not too comfy with the vertical clamp design. Not pleasant to my eyes either. I don't think I will go for them.

The A265 NF rings, made in-house they say.

Badger Ordnance has a quite interesting 6 screw alternative at $177 usd. By the time they are imported and taxed, they will cost roughly the same as the NF.

The Seekins 6/4 cap screw are also interesting @ $140 usd but again, the trouble of getting them here.

I think I'll bite the bullet and stick with NF.

I got the ultralites they are great, I do have a set of warn rings I paid 66$ Bashaw sports new, they are a good (on a bushnell) and Nightforce I believe recommends them if you are not going to buy there's. If you are over a 100$ just buy the Nightforce mine were 220$ but they are worth it.

I like NF Ultralites.

Btw, the Vortex precision matched rings are as far as I know made by seekin's, so I'd assume vortex dealers can get them in Canada, just different logo on them.

I've had my NSX 8-32X56 in NF .885" Ultralite rings for a couple years now. Not sorry at all, they're excellent rings. You don't need more surface area or clamping force.

Good choice, same ones I have. Just make sure you torque everything down with an accurate wrench as per the instructions. I can't remember if they call for the use of loctite on the cap screws or not but I did use a little of the blue stuff on mine.

I don't remember mention of thread locker, I torqued mine dry and have had zero problems. That's what you get when you buy quality - you get quality! That being said, thread locker doesn't hurt anything so have at er.

Nightforce are cut from a billet. Before taking the tops off I identify each cap to it's respective bottom with different colour tape so that the same top goes on the same base in the same direction.
I may be going a little overboard but it's ok I guess.

A little overboard is just right.

I don't know if this is correct...but my spending on rings would ramp up depending on the recoil and service of the rifle. The question here is what rings to use on a varmint rifle. I would think you could get away with any rings with the service and recoil of the rifle both being fairly mild. However, if I was in a tactical unit where my life depended on the rifle or was shooting a super magnum, I would tend to spend as much as necessary to get the best rings possible. Anyone see any holes in that logic?
Rings for "big kickers" that I've found very adequate are Spuhr, Near, Badger, NF, Burris.

Your logic is fine and I fully agree with it.

Except...

I insist on robust rings now because considering possible future service for that long range scope. In line with the investment made for quality glass, I do not mind the reasonable increment for stronger rings. This gives me the capability to migrate later on the optic to a platform/caliber more susceptible to share Newton's law with the scope and shooter.
