firstly thanks to everyone who commented on my other thread about which rifle to start out with, much appreciated. im going to go rem700

whats a good round to open with ? im wanting to shoot out to about 1000m, ill be using the rifle for hunting aswell ( untill i get a new action and barrell )

im partial to the .308win which most poeple recommend. but ive always liked the look of .270 or .300 win mag for the long action, because im wanting to drop the 700 into an AICS stock ( i cant find any .338 700's here in NZ, so that rules out making a fake AW )

im also wanting to start up reloading .. which round casings can i do most with ( will be getting a new barrell eventually, so also wanting to know what will be a good round to use with the new barrell, and if any of my above choices will still be worth using, or if i can use the cases for a similar round thats more favourable ? )

basically im a noobie and am trying to suck up as much info as i can before starting out :D

all input is greatly appreciated
and i will be going along to my local F-class regional champs in a few weeks time and absorbing as much information from the guys there aswell

For F-Class try 6BR or 6.5X284 (Check out www.6mmbr.com for more info)
6BR uses .308 boltface in a short action. (My personal favorite)
6.5X284 apparently takes a Long Action (I am told you can use a short action but you won't be able to unchamber a loaded round without removing the bolt)

6BR holds the world record for 600m.

Don't committ to anything until you see for yourself what the shooters are using at your local F-Class Regional Championships. There could be range regulations or rules that only allow up to a certain caliber. Don't worry to much about what actions they are using. Pay attention to what caliber, bullet, barrel and twist they are using.

6.5X47 should be kept in mind. 6mmBR site and benchrestcentral are informtive and me despite being arguementative, Maynard's advice is best. I was going to say what he did, but he beat me too it - makes me cranky.

Good luck.

Peter

Catnthehatt, rub it it in and I know, meant to say "despite me". Also, see what classes are popular in your area. Here F(F) rules are not strictly followed, but as along as there aren't complaints and rules are broken evenly.

Hey Peter and Maynard, looks like our 1K range is coming cloaser to reality so I don't have to shoot at the Outpost of the Empire anymore!:dancingbanana:
I just ordere 5 wireless camera transmitters for spotting targets, we have steel up at 8, 9 and 1,125 yards at the monent, and will have or prpoer targets up this fall if all goes well!:dancingbanana:
(sorry for the hijack ,guys!)

catnthehatt, please advise your executive Hirsch Precision Inc. will supply some Lapua product for prizes. Being the genius I am, I figured out that promoting shooting is good for business. More shooting = more buying. Very clever!

ATB,

Peter

That would entail talking to myself, Peter, and the doctor said it's okay as long as I don't do it in public!:D

Seriously, though, we will be in touch!
I fully expect Inpsector and a few others up frpom Cowtown for our first "official" match!

thanks guys.. im not actually wanting to shoot in the F class .. im just wanting to do some shooting up to about 1000m for my own enjoyment and improvement really .
the range ill be using is open caliber, as a .50 only turns up once in a blue moon here in nz and anything else is a restricted weapon.. so the biggest we usually find is 8mm

and as i said, will be using it for hunting initially as well as target shooting, so really curious if the rounds i first asked about are suitable.. or if i can easily switch to something else using the same casings ?

sorry if i was unclear

The guys were banging steel regularly out to the 1,000 the other day with their 7mm mags and 300 RUMS.
Both are good long range plinkers and dilever more than enough enegy at extended range to kill your hirsch.

dont think ive ever seen 300 rum in the stores here ( as i will use some off the shelf rounds for initial plinking and hunting before im established in reloading ..
so 7mm mag .. vs .270 ? ( not wsm.. just regular old .270 )

one better than the other ? using the eyecrometer they look about the same size but whats the real difference ?

Thje 7mag is a belted case , the basisc , and has quite a bit more capacity than the 270, which is based off the 30'06 case.
it's a fare better long range round, as is the 300WSM, 300 Winchester magnum, etc.

where in nz are you Fenix.NZ i may be able to help you out

and you can get the rum cals in nz im about to order two 300 rum rem 700 for projects

dont spend big bucks on a gun for long range shooting untill you understand
ballistics and long range shooting and reloading

best bang for buck is a rem 700 or similer 223 with a tight twist barrel and lots of ammo and reloading gear then go out a shoot lots and learn to shoot read the wind exc

then you will know what you want or need in a custom gun

if you looking to find out more about long range shooting, pm me and if your near dunedin i could take you out some time and give you a hand with it

a 7mm rm will send a 140g about 3200fps (more power)
a 270 will send a 140g about 2900fps

what do you want the gun for and to do ?

Check about four posts up, I thought he originally wanted to shoot Fclass as well, but it appears that he wants to just shoot targets and have fun at long range, but also wants to hunt with it.
That is why I didn't recommend a .223 , bu the larger calibers....

but hunt what ?we have a lot of small game and a how far 500 and under

or is it big reds and elk out to 800 or more ?

im not so bad with balistics, but do need more practise, obviously not having fired at any kind of range past 300
Dskd .. cheers for posting, good to find more NZ'ders .. and good to hear about the 300 rum.. i say ive never seen it probably because i havent looked that hard for it/ known about it
im in Hamilton actually Ds .. so it would be a fair trek down to dunedin.
ill be shooting mostly in king country, ureweras, and kawhia .
reds, sika ( spelling ) around there and porkers on the occasion, they like the river valleys in kawhia ( big open gulleys ) . ive got a Norc m305 that ive been plinking with and using on wallabys, goats, and the odd unfortunate hare. i realise this will be fine for bigger game as its .308 , but fails with the long distance side of things

.308 will go the 1000 yards with the right round, barrel twist etc. But.... it has a rainbow trajectory. It works ok for hunting although the 30-06 has a few hundred FPS over it and is preferred by most hunters. As an all around it'll work. I'd check out the R5 milsepc from Remington for an out of the box rifle that can be used for both of your needs. It's a good compromise. The 24 inch barrel and synthetic stock also suit your needs. Plus the R5 has a little bit of collectability to it.

That being said 7mm is highly favoured by many hunters and has done well in long distance shooting. Then you have to narrow down which 7mm. 7WSM, 7 RUM etc etc. That's up to you :D.

By the way if you think you'll only have one rifle and are planning on getting one that will do it all. I did that too. I bought a Winchester M70 Coyote (love this rifle) in 243WSSM. Can shoot deer, and even let it fly fairly far. This was the one rifle I was going to buy. Three years later and my gun safe is almost full. So much for the one multipurpose rifle.

6mm BR is a nice round. I may eventually get my M70 redone in 6br. It should feed from the mag too, since the 243WSSM isn't that much different :). A bit light for hunting bigger game though. Pretty much deer and smaller I would think.

thanks epoxy .. ive decided to go with the 7mm rem mag , but i will check out the R5 before buying anything .
i know as well as the rest of you that this wont be the only rifle :p.. it'll be a start though, then ill retire it specifically for hunting and get a barnard action and a barrell made for it
