looking to upgrade from my stock scope on my savage axis 7mm-08 - open to any suggestions! typically only shooting 150-200 at most but have a few spots I hunt in fields where it’s about 400 yards across. Thanks!

At what range do you zero?
How do you deal with longer ranges? Adjust the elevation setting on the scope or hold over?

Bunch of options avail on the Leupold front. These run anywhere from $400-650’ish used and are all up to the task of 150-400yrds.

Leupold FX 4x 4x33
Leupold FX 6x 6x36 and 6x42
Leupold VX III 2.5-8x36
Leupold VX IIIi 3.5-10x40

I took a chance on the crimson trace brushline 3-9 scope when they were on sale at cabelas where their BDC reticle is lined up with .308 speeds, which is pretty damn close to 7mm-08 for the distances i am shooting.
For the discounted price it's lived up to my expectations. The only main gripe is the magnification adjustment is a little on the stiff side on my particular scope. I don't know if it's a one off for me or if they're all like that but it's not the end of the world.

The Redfield Revolution in 2-7 would be a perfect fit for that rifle. They were made by Leupold, are smaller, lightweight and clear scopes and very well priced. I own two and had owned others. The only thing to watch for those is to look for std duplex reticle. The ballistic reticle they offer is a bit strange.

If you wanna keep it light, I would go with 2-7, 2.5-8, 4x or 6x any of these will work up to and past 400yards!
If you don’t care about the weight, and you want more magnification, a 2.5-16 or 3-10 would be great too but they are bulky and heavy!

I'd recommend Trijicon. Huron, Credo, or Accupoint, take your pick depending on the features you want and your price range.

I just went through this exact process for my Tikka 7mm-08, and I settled on the Accupoint, 3-9X40 for conditions very similar to what you're describing.

The biggest deciding factors for me in choosing Trijicon -

1) Durability and holding zero. Do some reading on the rokslide.com forums. I was initially set on a Leupold, but after reading there and around the internet, I crossed the newer Leupold scopes off of my list. The Trijicon scopes are consistently among the highest rated scopes tested when it comes to this factor.

2) Lightweight. The Accupoint 3-9X40 with the 1" tube is one of the lightest scopes on the market at about 13oz, which is remarkable considering factors #1 and #3.

3) Glass. The Trijicon Accupoint and Credo are excellent. They're not Alpha glass, but at their price point, at least to my eye, they're really hard to beat. Definitely as good or likely better than anything mentioned in this thread so far.

I wasn't sure about the illuminated dot in the reticle, but I actually really like it and I can see it coming in handy for sure.

There are better options out there if you're willing to sacrifice either weight or your budget, but for an all around hunting scope, I'm very happy with the choice.
