I just got a marlin 336 in 30-30 it has peep sights on it now but im looking for a scope.

Any tips and tricks for sighting will help also if the gun is zeroed for 100 yrds will it still be accurate at lets say 25 yrds or 200 yrds i just dont understand but want to start shooting lol

Any help will be help

thanks

What animal and at what distance do you plan to hunt with your rifle? A 30-30 with peep sights is nice for up close and moving game. You might want to consider the merit of a new rifle in another cartridge if you want something more suited for a scope and distance.

I had a marlin 30-30 and i had a 3-9x40 bushnell trophy on the top. Gettin a little older so need all the help i can get. Any mid range scope should do you for a 30-30. Just dont try to stretch the capabilities of the cartridge with longer shots. Good luck!

is a 3-12x40 ok to ?
what is the capablities of the 30-30 cartridge
Its not for hunting just for accuracy and seeing lol
And as i asked before if i sight it for a certian range is only accurate for that range or every time i look in the scope ima hit it ?

I would put a lyman peep on the rx, and shoot deer up to 150 meters away.
If set on a scope, and the Marlin is one of those that a scope will work ok if you keep the power down, and size.
I would go with a vintage 4x or 2.5 with a steel tube and perfect glass.
Bonus, for the quality, your saving money on todays kit.
And if this don't work, get a mini burris in 4x, or min 3200 series, or vx2, in a low var or fixed scope. 7 power being top end......

Just a word on the 4x12 ideas , and so on...think of it, a light lever hunting rifle with a large scope, set at 4 cause you learned the hard way, but still have trouble holding cause its all out of wack. If you want the rifle for bench only , get a 36 x;)

Any scope would be ok. I have one now with a 3-9x50 that i use for just about everything. I would site it an inch high at 100 yards and not try to shoot much beyond 150 depending on the load and experience you have. It is not a long distance gun or cartridge. everything out to 150 yards you should be able to hit no probs! The key is to buy some ammo and go to the range and practice, practice, practice!

You are in Ontario, hunting for whitetail, I assume.

The sights on it now are about as good as you can get. Ontario deer are usually shot at close range. Most of mine have been hit at 50 yards or less. Once it was 125 yards, but a lot have been at 25 yards or less.

A scope adds little to nothing at close range, and adds weight, makes that little rifle more awkward to carry, gets damp or wet in the rain. Snow messes up both ends. A big peep is all weather.

For Ontario whitetail I would sight in at 100 yards. The bullet will rise to point of aim at around 25 yards (perfect for a lot of shots) be a bit high at 75 and will be back on at 100.

If you absolutley have to have a scope because you don't want the speed, accuracy and reliability of a peep, go to a gunshow and buy a 2.5 or 3X fixed power scope. An old steel tube Weaver is indistructable and will retain its value when you decide you were better off with the peep.

Peep sights have a screw in peep. I use a small hole for sighting in and then switch to a large hole for hunting. Sometimes I take it out and just use the big threaded hole as the sight.
