Given the very harsh weather conditions (salt water, humidity, cold temperature) found on Labrador coast and Northern Quebec coast, which scope would you recommend having?

A friend of mine is looking at going on a kayaking expedition next summer and would appreciate receiving some advise as the best scope option for polar bear protection. Scope will be mounted on a Marlin 45-70 SS Guide Gun.

Leupold 1.5-5x20 illuminated reticle would be my choice. Heres one on my 7615.

Bushnell 4200 1.25-4 x 24mm with Rainguard if you want a scope.

HOWEVER, if it for protection, then forget about a scope, get a ghost ring sight (with protection wings) for it . It will be the most durable and quickest target acquisition option.

If you are shooting offhand or from an improvised rest, an open sight a (peep or ghost ring) will be pretty much as precise as a scope, since the accuracy depends on the shooter, not the sight/optics.

As an example, I was told about a target match at my club they held a number of years ago. It was open to ANY combination of gun/optics. Targets from 25 to 150 metres, shooting from several positions, standing, sitting prone. The match was won by a person shooting a muzzleloader using peep sights. It was the first and last time they held that type of match. ;) Accuracy is no better than the person behind the trigger.......

I would agree that a ghost ring would be a wise choice. Next would be a Leupold 1.5-5x20 or 1.75 – 6x32. They are a great combination of reliability and price; and a lifetime warranty to boot!

Low magnification if ultimately "self-defense". I have used higher end Bushnells, & Leupolds here for years.

A rifleman series would be a great choice with 1.5-4.5x for example

Nothing wrong with the standard iron sights ... less to go wrong also quicker and he can keep both eyes open. For the described purpose a scope is unneccessary and in rainy/wet weather may be tougher to use. He should save the money planned for a scope and get a digital camera so a buddy can film the shooting to prove it was "righteous" ..
