Best scout scope? Mounting on a ruger gunsite

Why not buy the XS rail for gunsite scout ? that way you can mount regular scope with quick detachable, still be able to use iron sight when need.

Only fixed 4x I know of is the Weaver K series, Cabelas.ca used to have but now lists them as NLA, maybe try the stores, they may have stock still?

Other than that, the Burris 2-7x? Dunno who carries them, they come up on Amazon but at a stupid (not in the good way) price.

Hi-Lux 2-7 carried by Wolverine and Wanstalls. Great scope. Great price. Just leave it on 4X, but then you have the option, to change if you want to.

Ellwood Epps sells Weaver scopes. Not long ago (i.e. some weeks, not years) someone on this forum said they got a K4 Scout for about $210. For the quality of the Classic K series scopes, that's a good price. (4x28mm, duplex reticle, matte black finish only.)

KePet may be right in post #6. I have one of those HiLux 2-7 scouts and I haven't put it on the rifle but it seems solid and just looking through it the glass is good for the price point.

Most scout rifles use an intermediate eye relief (IER) scope don't they?

I'm running a scout mounted Leupold FXII 2.5x IER scope on my Marlin Guide Gun and the eye relief is perfect.

Yeah, I was replying to the scope he suggested, its not IER. And I think the scope you have is 2.8, I am looking for a good x4. Where did you get the leupold?

If you intend to mount a fixed 4X scope on your rifle, you might as well choose a conventional scope, a M-8 4X Leupold is a good choice. If you mount an extended eye relief 4X scope ahead of the action, scout style, you will have an extremely small field of view, and the rifle will be slow and tedious to get on target. The concept of the scout scope is that the scope image blends with your normal field of view so that while you are aware of the reticle which seems to hang in the air, you do not have the limitations ordinarily placed on your field of view by the size of the scope image. Thus a scope of 2X-2.5X seems to fill the bill very well, and does not pose any serious disadvantage to practical precision. I first had a 2.75X Burris on my rifle, then switched to a 2X Leupold, and first round hits on targets that replicated the size of big game were easy out to a quarter mile. But on close range moving targets, the low powered scout scope comes into its own.

Even at 2X, you can see and hit your target if the light is good. But a dark target in a shadow or against a dark background, in bright sunlight, does become a problem with the low magnification . . .

Good post, thanks for the info! This is just a fun camping/bush gun, so sounds like the X2 will be a better option.

Figured I would update, found a leupold IER in a local shop and grabbed it, this is now my favorite gun to shoot. I suggest to anyone in getting the same scope or one with the same power. Boomers post said it perfectly, as it is by far the fastest scoped gun I have, target acquisition is amazingly fast and accurate.

Cheers and thanks again for the help everyone.
