Bat said it all. Having owned both I would buy an 1100 over the 1187.

Remington 1100 Magnum was my first gun... I would recommend them to anyone.
As long as you keep the O-ring clean, and in good condition, they run flawless.
Also, you might want to note that if you DO come across an older 1100 Magnum (3" chamber), they are designed to cycle with 3" shells only, not 2 3/4". I found that 2 3/4 hunting rounds did not cycle the action reliably.
The older 3" chamber barrels only had one small gas port. I bought a new barrel from Russells and found that the newer barrels had a slightly larger gas port, and they cycle both flawlessly. Even when shooting cheap Walmart shells.
Anywho, as mentioned, I would highly recommend them.

You have very few choices if you want to stay around $600.
Apart from the Remington, only the Stoeger 2000, Mossberg 935 and Baikal MP-153 are in your budget range.
Of the above I prefer the Baikal as it will cycle anything from light target loads to the heaviest 3.5" monsters. It comes with 4 chokes (all steel approved). It's a solid and reliable autoloader. I have one and am very happy with it.

11-87 recoil is virtually the same as the 1100... the gas cuts the recoil in half, roughly.
