What do you feel is the best all around semi-auto (attainable in Canada in either non-restricted or restricted) for all purposes. Put aside the practicality of parts and their cost and availability. Just concentrate on the rifle and its' caliber.

If I was going to rely on just one rifle for everything I’d expect it to fulfill the following:

1. Non-restricted
2. Large enough caliber for hunting (if you hunt)
3. Accurate enough for target work (maybe the ability to be scoped)
4. Ammo that is cheap enough to plink with and acquire adequate skill to accurately hunt/ target practice with.
5. Large enough caliber to use for predator defense while horse back ridding, camping, and hiking.

My preferences would be: CZ-858 (short ranges), SKS (short ranges), and M14S (the best choice in my opinion)

Restricted

Stag AR-15 16" in .308

Good to beyond 300 with care and a good load.
Easts whatevery you feed it.
Easy to take care of.
Takes a beating and shoots dirty (very dirty)

Non Restricted

180B or XCR (if there is such a thing LOL) .308

If you're going to hunt with a semi-auto military rifle, you're stuck with the M14. It's a great rifle, but it definitely doesn't have much competition in terms of other 30 cal military rifles you're allowed to shoot.

Based on the two deer I took this year with the 7.62x39 in a bolt action I guess the Sig in 7.62x39 wouldn't be too bad. I just can't get worked up about the M14 so far not there there anyother options.

Sig 540 made by Famae in Chile. John at Wolverine said they will not sell to him or any other distributor. Portugal also made the 540 under licence so perhaps there are some over there kicking around.
AR10 A4 16'' barelled carbine shooting the 7.62 Nato round is another option.

I hate the Tavor! Right hand only!

Okay I got this one for good price ...but a Voere 2185 hunter half stock model
in calibre 30-06........and please respond if you have one too.

I learned the hard way, but you can buy all the spare parts/mags directly from the company in Kuftstien Austria, without any ridiculous export permits!:D

And trust me, I am not a big fan of newly made european firearms.....
PS, the only drawback is it does not group 180s well, but I stick to 168s maximum, usually 150 grain bullets though.
