Best (shortest?) pump for travel?

What's the most compact package that can stow away in a backpack (motorcycle trip purposes) but be put together quickly when needed?

Bottom line is that its gotta be 26" overall so as to be non-restricted... but I'd like to be able to break it down further to easily fit into a bag. Is there something out there that will tear down quickly and without tools? Ideally I was thinking of something like a 12.5" 870 with a detached full sized stock... but to reattach the stock requires a screwdriver or something doesn't it?

Any ideas?
 
How are the Knoxx stocks attached? Are they easily removed? 27" is right on the money... but shorter still would be better.

How bout your Fabarm? How easy does the stock come off? Im still waiting to hear back on a used 14" Martial...
 
The 14" Martial is 33" with the stock attached. The Dlask with spec op fully attached is 27". It's not a good idea to be constantly detaching-reattaching a butt stock on a 12G shotgun. The fabarm has a 5/8th bolt right under the recoil pad and is a breeze to remove... I still would rather not constantly tinker with it. The new Can-AM 12.5" shotguns, with, say a hogue 12" LOP OR spec ops would be a compact and economical choice.


I'll report back on that when I get mine in my hands. :D
 
Well I know you said you wanted a pump, but a cheaper, smaller package would be a single shot 12ga like a Cooey 840 or similar. Cut the barrel down to 18.5 inches and then the longest piece you have to carry is 18.5 inches. It goes together and comes apart in 30 seconds or less.

I made a similar gun. I cut the barrel to 21 inches though and had the end drilled for choke tubes. Goes with me just about everywhere I go.

If you do cut a barrel, it has to be greater than 18.5 to be non prohib in Canada
 
Maybe a dumb idea but what if I bought a cheap SxS or O/U and cut the barrels down to 18.5"?

Do those shotguns break down quickly? Then again maybe weight would become a factor?

Ideally I just need something that will break down into pieces smaller than about 20" each and put together quickly.
 
Just to update... I went to LeBarons just now and they had a Remington/Baikal SPR220 with a 20" barrel and it was really quick to take down. Overall length is 33" and it breaks down quite neatly at the 20" barrel. This may be exactly what I need.

You're right technically its only 4 steps but it seems a little complicated or like it would be too finicky... having to turn 90 degrees that way, then this way, then touch this pin, push that thing in... yadda yadda. The Rem SPR220 was really quick... you pull the lever on the fore-end down and it comes off, then you break the action open and the whole thing comes apart. At night in the middle of nowhere that's what counts most to me, IMO.

Are O/U barrels easily shortened by a gunsmith? Or is this a no-no?

Depends on how much the shotgun is worth...O/U tend to be worth quite abit.

Go find yourself an old break action Iver Johnson single shot 12 gauge, and get it cut down to 18 1/2"...simple, reliable, exposed hammer, cheap price, can't go wrong with that.

I think I saw some in the EE section.

Okay...so an 18" is the shortest barrel you can have.

That means with a conventional pump action, you are good to go in terms of a folder or pistol grip stock. 100% legal as far as our firearms laws go, given that your OAL will be over 26". An 18" 870 with a top folder (or even a Knoxx SpecOps folder) would fit the bill, but you'd need a tall backpack. You're probably looking about 30" total.

As far as actual take-down models...I don't have any first-hand knowledge.
