I recently picked up my dad's S&W 686 and 19 revolvers and the trigger just breaks like glass.

Are there any semi automatic with a comparable single action trigger?

Ive shot:

Beretta 92FS
CZ SP01 Shadow
Colt 1911 Seventy Series Tuned
Glocks
Walther P99
Sig Sauer Xfive All Round

The 1911 feels the closest because its a straight pull trigger with minimal travel. Are there other pistols i should look into trying?

Im currently awaiting the delivery of my Sig Sauer 1911 9mm Traditional Match Stainless but if theres something EVEN BETTER, i might consider switching my order.

Oh yes one more thing, does changing a DA/SA pistol to single action only change the way the trigger feels? I am asking this because I might consider changing my SP01 Shadow to Single Action Only if it does help significantly.

Are there other single action only pistols i should look into trying?

Try a SIG P210 or a Finnish Lahti L-35. These two pistols have great triggers. In fact the Finnish Lahti probably has the best trigger ever.

Due to the straight bar design, the 1911 is probably going to be the best by far. The Sig triggers are also very good, and I've heard positive things about the M&P Pro and also the Apex trigger kit. I tried the Pro and quite liked the trigger, but it's no 1911 ;)

You don't new to change the shadows trigger to SA only to have a great trigger. Just get a proper trigger job done on it. Mine doesn't have any creep to it and is down to 2lbs on SA. But other than that a 1911 is the only pistol that will come close to a revolvers trigger.

If you change the Shadow's trigger over to an SA only you'll limit the competition classes you can use this gun in. And frankly if you don't shoot in any sort of handgun matches or at least try them I feel you're missing out on more than half the fun of owning any sort of handgun.

I've felt some superb 1911 triggers. But you're only going to find them on higher end models or the less expensive options that have been treated to a good and knowing trigger job.

The CZ single action only trigger is very nice in stock form. Once treated to some knowing work on the action it becomes as nice as the stock SA revolver trigger feel. In particular the CZ Tactical Sport model I shot which had been treated to a nice trigger job felt as sharp and crisp as a lightened S&W SA trigger. A truly amazing gun it was.

With DA/SA guns you can get the SA trigger to feel darn nice. But if you keep the DA option there will always be the long travel takeup before you feel the trigger bow begin to apply force to the SA sear. It needs to be there for the DA mechanism to have the pull distance. Most of us shooting in SA quickly get the feel of pulling up that pre-travel with just enough force that we don't cause the SA sear to move. THEN we pull through to take the shot.

In a stock pistol, I haven't seen or felt any trigger that came close to a S&W Single Action trigger.

The sweetest SA triggers on a semi auto that I have felt were those on my old full custom non-compensated 1911s.

I used McCormick matched drop-in titanium hammer/sear and triggers. Literally like the proverbial glass rod breaking. They were so crisp, without freeplay, creep and overtravel (adjustable). Trigger pull was 16 ounces but completely reliable and safe. Double taps were so easy...7 yd DTs were 2-3 inches apart with hard ball ammo.

Had three Colts set up this way...still miss them on some days:-(

Another trigger that felt similar to these was on my CZ 85 race gun, except that there was some freeplay.

The best trigger i have is on a Caspian 1911... breaks clean with a trigger pull of 2 lbs 4 ounces..

The next best trigger i have is on my pair of Tanfoglio Limited Custom II they are very clean breaking with very little creep and breaks at 2 lbs 8 ounces..

I will say that i just got a S&W 686 4.2 and just finished a trigger job and got the SA trigger to 2 lbs 6 ounces.. but very crisp.. The DA finally settled at 6.5 lbs and so far reliably ignites federal pistol primers in my 38 sp loads... fingers crossed...
