Im looking into picking up an sks soon. Im just curious as to what the best model in terms of accuracy and quality. Im not expecting much for accuracy, I just dont want something that shoots minute of barn. Any information you guys have would be appreciated.

Thanks

well chinese are the easiest to find and they shoot decently enough and the yougos are the best looking one around and better on precison. If your very very lucky and manage to get your hand on a russian are albanian one than jumps on it. Butg all in all, you've got 2 choice and i would go for the yougo one. They look nicer:D And if you find an SKS-D than your in paradise! I know their's a few Ds in the exchange forum.

As was said, the Russian ones are the best. Its really luck of the draw for accuracy though. Some people buy Chicom SKS's and have horrid accuracy and some buy them and have very respectable accuracy. The same goes for the Yugo's (although their external finish is much nicer). The SKS was designed to dump rounds into a man sized target at 300m, so if yours can do that, than it is accurate enough for its intended purpose.

I depends on your budget, and how hands-on you are with tinkering and such. Chicom SKS's are the most affordable and the easiest to find. The quality is reasonable (read; functional but not pretty), but like muh-mauser said, out-of-the-box accuracy is a bit of a mixed bag, some are OK and some are horrible. That being said, they can be made to shoot pretty straight with a little elbow grease. There are quality anomalies within the chinese models as well, some factories produced much lower quality pieces than others. Mine is a Factory 26 model with threaded barrel, not pinned. Stay away from pinned barrels! No no bad!

I've shot a Yugo SKS, and it was nicer than my chinese milsurp one, but honestly the accuracy was about the same. With open sights, 4" groups at 100 yards (with a flyer or two) are what you should expect, regardless of where the gun was made. In comparison, my dad can only do about 1" smaller than that with his .30-30 lever gun, and it's WAY higher build quality (and shoots WAY higher quality ammo) than my SKS.

Bah, whatever. Just get one, you'll be happy with it no matter what. The smell of Czech FMJ may take some getting used to, though :D

The best sks would be the one on the bottom of the English Channel, what a waste of metal.
*Yeah, you're right*, I'll just go throw* my rifle *in the river *right now. *I'm so stupid*, thinking that my SKS* is anything* more *than a toy gun. *I feel dirty even* touching it, *after finding out *how much of a ***"waste of metal"*** it is*.

Note; *=sarcasm dripping from my words.

It's a free country, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm glad you chose to so eloquently express yours, it warms my heart :) Good on ya!

BeerBoy,
Thanks for the informative link on identifying threaded vs pinned. I've got the threaded version. :)

Hey 303, I've had my SKS for 20yrs and love it. Wouldn't sell it. You should try one out (the better versions) and see that it's quite a dandy little carbine with decent accuracy. Perhaps you've had a bad experience with one?

I've owned about 7 sks's over the last 4 years and I would say the best one I had (before I sold it lol) was my Yugo SKS. I am sure the fellow who bought it off me is very pleased with the rifle.

Anyhow, this is how I see sks's in my eyes:

Russian SKS - excellent gun, sorta rare, kinda pricy

Norinco SKS - excellent gun (if of the threaded variety), cheap, chrome bbl

Norinco SKS-D - excellent gun, a bit of a pain to load the short 5rd mags, so get some 30(5) rounders for it, can be made to look sorta like an AK if that's what you're going for.

Yugo SKS - my primo choice, excellent metal work, beautiful hardwood, length of pull is better (longer rifle made in europe vs china), good resale value, can be had in like new condtition if you're lucky.

p.s.

any comments such as the one made by "303carbine" make me roll my eyes at what is wrong with the gun community... There is no such thing as a bad/ugly/useless gun. I like all guns some more than others but would never out someone down. Would you tell the young kid at the range that his 50 dollar single shot cooey 22 is a piece of ####, to his face if you can tell he is having fun and at least he is "one of us" a bonafide gunowner.

Just to throw a whammy into the conversation, I fellow I know really really liked his East German 'Karbiner'. High standards of materials, fit and finish. If it is/was anything like the East German AK I examined in Kuwait City, it would be a dynamite rifle to look at, and probably on paper too. That rifle was sold off in the mid '90s when Wes emigrated from Regina to Australia. A grand collection of military semis liquidated just in time to do it all over again (but get paid for the pain).

He He

Yugo SKS are better that the chinese (at least in my books) I had a nice Yugo, shot great, stock was 100x better than my old SKS-D. Had to sell it though to fund my AR addiction:)

You can't go wrong with an SKS.

Get real! It's a great rifle, I have had $3000 AR's and M96's I prefer my Yugo SKS to!

Ang hands down, Yugo SKS's are the best, no doubt, with a heavy preference for the 59/66.

...I'd be happy to trade you any ARs, M96s, or even an SL8 that you have lying around for Yugo 59/66 SKS rifles....;)

What was the biggest difference for you between the russian and the yugo?
Why is the yugo your primo choice when compared to a russian?
I have a russian that is why I am curious and a bit surprised that you think the yugo is better.
Any responders would be appreciated.

Nothing wrong with the SKS, and anybody who can't see it as a great bargain is a moron plain and simple.

I agree.. with the caveat that it is a great, fun gun for what it is: A semi auto 100 yard or less lead sprayer. It will never be a AR-15 or a sniper rifle. Any investment other than a new stock for the chinese versions is ridiculous. Also I have heard that the SKS's from china over the last year or 2 have had ALOT of quality issues. My "D" is about 3 yrs old and works great, my only beef is the quality of the blueing (pretty weak).
