alright so i bought an enfield sporter for $90 and it shoots really well (except my bolt head is worn so i need to grab a bolt for it) but the stock is terrible looking badly sporterized been sanded and varnished i belive so im thiking of throwing a syntehtic on it since its bubba'd already....

any idea for a stock for this rifle? also is there anyway to paint the barrel/receiver flat black? the metal is tarnished really bad and its not cleaning up to well ive seen them flat black before just wondering what kinna primer/paint you would use?....

Thanks....

I would use steel wool to prepare the metal and reblue it, it's easier and more "correct" in my opinion.

Getting a spare set of better looking wood stock (sporterized) should be quite cheap too, so for next to nothing you'd get a good result (cheaper than a new stock anyways).

Just a back up plan,

Lou

How do you know your bolt head is worn? The generally dont wear out. And if it is truly worn, then you dont need to replace the whole bolt, just the bolt head.

ok maybe its not the bolt head? the bolt head pops up and off the rail on the right side of the reciver when extracting a case? the raid doesnt appear to be worn very much at all but neither does the bolt head?

Where it pops up could be a factor in determining what is causing it. If it's indeed a no1, then if the bolt pops off the rail at the very end of the bolt pull back (right against the reciever bridge) then I would suspect it is the retaining spring on the body of the reciever and not the bolt head that's at fault.

For an enfield your best bets are to

A)get either the full wood stock set (expensive, but gives you an original gun) or get a sportered stock set (ultra cheap). The plastic sets are expensive to buy but look and fit badly.

For the finish, depends on what your intent is. If it's going to be a truck gun, then getting a purpose made high wear paint is your best bet, as it's going to look REALLY bad if you paint it with regular paint that then starts to flake, peel etc.

If you want it to look better, you can have it blued, or buy hot or cold bluing components. Then you have a gun that you can learn on that'll set you up for future projects where you'd otherwise be hooped. Plus it makes the gun a lot more personal!

Bolt head is most likely worn or the retainer at the rear damaged. Post a picture if you can? Receiver can be cleaned up with a little WD40 and steel wool. Degreased and cold blue with Birchwood Casey SuperBlue....preheat the part with a hair dryer....it give a more durable finish than a straight application. Chuck the wood and put on ATI or similar stock. Will make a great hunting rifle.
