I am wondering what to do.

Should I apply for Sept. 10 to 30 in an area with more authorizations and better odds or for October 1 to 14 during the peak of the rut? Oct. 1 to 14 has poorer odds in the area I'm looking at, but deep down I prefer that time period. From what I've seen in recent years September can be darn hot for moose hunting if lucky enough to be drawn.

But the saw-off is that there would have been some serious hunting occurring in the area for two weeks before October 1.

Flip a coin, this year all bets are off as far as the weather goes. Two weeks ago we were frozen solid now the lake is open and the fry are flipping all over. Who knew? My son backed up his holidays to June because he had to decide by the end of April and the lake was still frozen solid. He was to be here tomorrow and the fishing is awesome, hopefully will still be OK when he arrives June 10th. Total crap shoot.

The last bull I drew was Sept 10-30 in 5-2#. Both my partners and I were successful, but not until the the bitter end. It was hotter than the hinges on the gates of he**, so a bit of a panic to get the meat cooled down. That was about 8 years ago, so maybe I won’t be on reduced odds this year...

The zone you are applying for is a pretty rugged piece of real estate. It doesn't get as much pressure as other parts of Region 5 and the majority of the hunters are "road-pounders" running the branch roads and skid trails. Get a bit off the beaten track a bit and you should do OK. A bit of the area you are planning on applying for was burnt in the fires last summer so those portions will be off-limits this year.

As I mentioned to you if you do get a moose down watch for bears. The grizzlies in that area are not as large as coastal bears but all seem to have been born with bad attitudes!

Thanks 'Boo. If drawn we will heed your advice.
