What's the best value 300 win mag for approx 1KM shots?

I previously found out that 308 is harder to shoot past 700m and I would like to shoot plates at 1000-1400M with a buddy.

338LM is out because of recoil/cost.

Reloading 300 win mag doesn't cost that much more vs 308... and it extends range from 750m to 1200M or so I guess.

I previously had a rem 700P in AICS stock with custom brake, rail, etc, that shot well but would like to get a 300 win mag at a reasonable cost.

The savage 110 stealth evolution looks nice with a brown frame, alum chassis, top rail, brake, 5r rifling 9.3 twist.... looks like it's got everything already in and all I would need to add is rings/scope.

Opinions?

anyone has an opinion on the best quality-value LR tactical 300 win mag?

cant afford an accuracy international, barrett or custom build, wife always wants to go to disney with the kids, and I need a new house/quad/explorer SV, so I'll take the value build :p

thanks

You need to keep in mind that the bigger expense here is going to be optics.

Rifles - Savage 110 Evolution, Ruger Precision Rifle Gen 3, Remington R700 5R MilSpec or a used build off of the EE?

Scopes - You can't cheap out if you want to shoot that kind of distance. What you're going to need is not magnification, but internal elevation/travel. You should be spending a minimum of $1000-$1500 here to ensure down range consistency. Your Athlon, Vortex Diamondback Tactical, Bushnell Forge, Nikon or anything else in that price range just won't cut it. You're looking for a minimum of 20-23 MILS (65-75 MOA) internal adjustment and exposed turrets are not a must, but they help. Don't stress over 24+ power, in fact a quality 18x or 20x will be better off for you than a crappy 6-24x or 4.5-30x.

Just some thoughts.

I will just say that factory rifles are always limited by the barrel you end up with... some shoot ok.... some dont and with that much fuel, barrel heat becomes a very real problem. Heat induced warping is a big reason shooters get frustrated with their rifles. A 300WM is NOT needed to shoot at extended distances on targets... hunting is a whole different argument.

With the right bullet and setup, the 308 win is very capable of shooting out to 1500yds. This Oct, I reached out to 1830yds. The 300wm just pushes the same bullets faster which makes it a bit easier.

A real simple and inexpensive option is the 6.5 Creedmoor... love it or hate it, it works. A 140gr class bullet at 2700fps will easily reach 1500yds. Less cost, recoil and barrel wear. I enjoyed a day shooting at 1500+yds with my friend running a 338 Edge and 300gr bullets. yes, I drifted a bit more but hit rates were similar if not better for the 6.5 CM

I am looking at a 30cal boomer but my goals are 2000m+... nowadays, 1000yds is not a long shot.

wrt to optics, travel and tracking is a huge need BUT there are many options now that work and do not cost all that much.

Shooting out to 1500+yds with a Sightron STAC 3-16 LRMOA.... $700 optic... rated at 70 MOA of travel and a reticle that adds another 30 moa at 16X... if you go 300WM, that will take you out beyond 1 mile easily.

The STAC 4-20 is rated at 80 moa and 20 moa in the reticle at full mag A $750 scope. Tracking have been solid on these scopes.

I have using and competing with a variety of Athlon optics. Playing a bunch with rimfires out to 350/400yds... now that is ALOT of elevation travel. last weekend an Argos BTR 6-24 took an overall win at a match in ON. $720... 18 mils internal... 9 mils above and below the center in the reticle if you want to shim.

FYI, JBM predicts around 18mils to reach 1575yds using a Berger 200-20X at 2850fps.

Athlon has a 1000yd club in the US... alot of shooters have earned their patch using the Argos BTR and of course, the higher grades of Athlon. Check out their facebook page and I think I saw several youtube vids as well.

If you want more features, better glass and more travel, there are plenty more options that will not break the bank... SFP or FFP options galore.

Have a look at the Midas TAC 6-24.... 25mils internal, 19mils in the reticle.. FFP

My current fave is the Athlon Ares ETR ... Really good glass (ED), 32 mils internal, 19 mils reticle. Tracking was spot on taking my 308win to 1840yds.

Optics will certainly be a critical part of your LR rifle. Choose scopes that have a good record for tracking

You definitely don't need a 300 Win mag to shoot to 1400 yards.

You need to look at the ballistic coefficient of the bullets and without pre-conceived assumptions about diameter.

Go to Berger bullets web site for example

You will find that 6.5 MM and 7 MM bullets usually have higher BC's than 308s.

You can reduce your recoil, reduce the ammo cost and enjoy shooting a whole lot more with less recoil and even better ballistics.

If you really want a screamer, try an Ackley improved 30-06 necked down to 6.5mm for example. You can hit 3200 FPS with a 0.700 BC bullet.

That will out perform the 300 win mag all day and every day.
