The easiest way to remove Cosmoline is by pouring very hot, nearly boiling water on it, it will soften and then, since it's oil, the cosmo will run off on top of the water. Then wipe/spray with WD40 and lube as usual. Safe for stocks too. Just be sure you have enough time to do the whole job and don't leave the wet gun sitting.
