Does anyone have advice on how to fix a crack on a stock. The crack is behind the groove that the bolt sits in. It extends back about 1/3 down the pistol grip. The pistol grip is not compromised and things appear more of a cosmetic rather than a functional nature. The stock is going to be refinished.

Thanks

If the stock is cracked in the pistol grip, you might want to check the stock behind the recoil lug and behind the magazine. Quite often the crack will start behind the lug and over time move to the rear.

To repair, I use Brownells Acra-glas epoxy thinned with toluene or acetone. Put some of the thinned epoxy in a syringe(available from Lee Valley at http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=20003&cat=1,110,42967&ap=1 )
spread the crack as much as you dare and inject. Wrap the stock with stretched surgical tubing and let dry.

There's a reason the stock cracked(other than falling on it in which case ignore the following). It could be because the recoil lug isn't bedded tight to its mortise in the stock. Another reason could be that the rear receiver tang is inletted too tight to the wood and during recoil acts as a splitting wedge.

In either case, it may be a good idea to fix the cause of the split prior to refinishing.

Replacing the stock (if that is possible without breaking the bank) is also a good idea. You don't say what the rifle is but if it is a Remington 700 or something like that there are lots of good quality reasonably priced stocks available.
