I'd like to add a scope to my parts bin SKS :D

Was wondering what the best way to mount one was? I've read that the one that attaches to the receiver cover isn't that great, as that part doesn't fit great to begin with, plus you have to remove that in order to clean it. Which is every time with corrosive ammo.

Also, are those shell ejecter covers any good? Or would that get in the way of a scope?

The best solution would be an AK type side mount. There are no great mounting solutions unfortunately, for the reason's you mention.

Thanks.

Anyone have experience with this scope?

edit: oops that just the mount, not the scope.

Another poster has tried it. It was disapointing in that it had to be removed to get the handguard and it's piston off the gun for cleaning. If we were not using corrosive ammo, that wouldn't be such a huge issue.

Ah crap. Thanks for that info. I guess i'll leave it for now.

If you go the cheap route, make sure you get a NEW rec cover, then fit it tightly. So tight that you have to use a punch to seat it. Mine works good, but I still sight it in every time. But it doesn't get too far off base, and after a few shots and a little tuning it works fine. Personally I'm going to drill one but one may still have to take the scope off when you wash down the rifle.

www.kalinkaoptics.com has excellent prices (roughly equivalent to choate's price for their sidemount) and are quick-detachable to boot! I don't have one personally, but they look like the cat's ass. I've got a reciever cover mount on mine, the Leapers model with 4 screws that tighten it against the reciever. If you replace the reciever cover latch pin with an M6 bolt, a lot of the slop is taken up at the back of the reciever and it tends to return to zero pretty good. Haven't gotten out to range test the damn thing though, so no word on how well it performs under recoil or repeated firings.

You don't necessarily have to remove the reciever cover every time you clean the rifle. You just want to clean the parts that are exposed to combustion gases, specifically the salts from the primer, which are the only corrosive component of milsurp ammo. This means the bolt face, extractor/ejector, bolt carrier, chamber & throat area, bore & gas system. The recoil spring under the reciever cover is not exposed to any of the combustion gases.

Receiver cover of any type is POS by definition, same as gas tube "scout" - from my personal experience.
IMHO, only realistic solutiona are choate's drill&tap or side rails and mounts, particullary this one (which holds great even on my Mosin):

$70 US
Kalinka carries them.

Prosper's right, they ship their parts directly from their warehouse in russia, so no problem with export permits :D

This is the combo I think would work best with an SKS;
vomz_sks_plate_150.jpg
SVD/SKS side mount rail, drilled, p/n AMSKSSP, $19.97 US
zen_low_svd_weav_1_150.jpg
Low Profile SVD/SKS offset weaver rail, p/n AMSVDPOSPSMWB, $34.97 US (bargain bin)

This would allow you to mount any red dot or weaver scope rings you want, offset slightly left from bore centre, and quickly detachable for transport or cleaning. You drill & tap the reciever to bolt the mount rail on, then the weaver rail clamps onto the side rail. Nice 'n neat, and rock solid, not to mention 100% repeatable return-to-zero!! Jeez, I sound like a freakin' salesman!! lol :p

That's the point - choate mount allows to center optics, plus this one above
made of quite soft alloy... Nay. I would't go for it, personally. I'm awaiting for this one

MOLOT Vepr/AK/Saiga Ultima Low Profile Side Mount, Picatinny Rail w/ 26.5 mm Rings and 1" Inserts ( #AMVPO102 )

They say it's made of steel. Has anyone had an experience with it?

The recoil spring under the reciever cover is not exposed to any of the combustion gases.

I suspect they are judging by the stank o'rama of the recoil spring, and surrounding parts.

Thanx for the tips on what mounts to get...I was having trouble figuring things out.
