Hey guys,

So I just shot my sks and now want to put a pistol grip on it and tech sights. So with that in mind what's the easiest and cheapest way to get a pistol grip?

I'm worried if I just get a new stock that some fitting for the tech site might be necessary?? Would that be a real pita if there is? And this is the most expensive option.

I also thought I could just buy a pistol grip for an AR and do some very simple carpentry to attach? Probably the cheapest option but most pita and may not be worth it? Also I'm not sure where to get just the grip.

So what do u guys think is the best cost to "less pita" way to do it? I'm fine with simple carpentry but what would you guys do?

Thanks guys

I mean, people drill pistol grips into the stocks all the time and its ridiculous on the SKS imo.

I figure if your buying new, by the time you consider labour, materials, parts and the risk your taking you may as well get an ATI or tapco on sale or used. I seen them selling new for 80$ locally and 40$ used. I dont see how adding a grip to a stock sks would be comfortable.

The stocks ALWAYS go on sale too, So why not just buy them then? The sks wood is at best iffy, dry wood logged in oil and cosmo and I wouldn't wanna be drilling #### into it that may put pressure on it and crack. Thats just me... To each their own. Good luck and post some pics.

leave sks the way it is. its the way its meant to be. but if you must do awful things to it get the tapco stock or ati. the fastest and easyest way to get what you want without ruining a good stock. as for the tech sights there isnt any fitting required on a standard russian sks. only yugo ones from what ive seen. and depending on the polymer deformation you choose they may not fit.

Personally I would leave it as is. But, if you're set on doing it then go for a Tapco or ATI stock like previously mentioned. I'm sure they pop up on the EE for cheap. It will give you better ergonomics than bubba'ing the poor girl.

The SKS platform does not suit pistol grips. The rifle will become uncomfortable and cumbersome.

I dunno. I've shot SKSes with a variety of money-grab aftermarket stocks and magazines... It doesn't improve or "up-grade" anything. I agree with EL34/6L6 that pistol grip stocks make the gun feel very unnatural/cumbersome and front heavy. It's all a waste of money and time IMHO. Tightening up the stock fit and doing a trigger job is money better spent then an aftermarket pistol grip stock. As for mags... learn to load clips like a boss and you'll soon see the SKS is an excellent weapon as-is. Also... the stock isn't too short. Your just holding to wrong.

(that's right, I said "weapon". Booga-booga)

i just love a pistol grip and think it will improve how it feels. Stripper clips are kick ass!

You should buy one of those twist tightening grips for a handheld grinder lol just to give EL34 nightmares...:HR:

I used to own a pistol grip SKS for around 2 years. It was cool. That's about it though. Fun, but not something I looked forward to shooting. Soley for comfort reasons.

I also slapped together this setup which felt better as it had a pistol/field stock grip which was very nice. Except the stock was quite a bit heavier than the OEM or any other. Again fun...but not practical over 30-45 mins of use.

The best way to add a pistol to an SKS is to move the trigger forward and bolt the pistol grip directly to the trigger group. This alleviates the front-heaviness, and puts the fire control hand in a good position to operate the magazine release.

Of course, this requires 40+ hours of custom fabricating.

Whatever you do, just check if it's an original unrefurbished sks...there's lots of guys who are in the market for these and they're starting to become hard to find...there's lots of refurbs kicking around that don't necessarily have the collectible value purists look for...
