Best woodcock gauge

I mostly hunt with a light short barreled gun with open chokes and a light load of number 9’s
gauge is totally irrelevant to me but I’ve noticed it’s gotten smaller as I’ve gotten older

I guess I had a failure to load here, or my opinion was too controversial and got deleted. Anyway, I said that I agree that the gauge isn't as a important on timberdoodles as the shot size and #8 or #9 are ideal, then added that the choke should be open and that a double barrel with 2 chokes would be ideal, both of them open. I will add that as far a gauges go, there's far more available for 12s than any other, then 20s and then you're buying what you can get from a limited selection.

Welcome to Nutz from SEOntario. As suggested from Claudio, smaller gauge with small pellets. Woodcock are small and easily harvested! Gauge does matter and large payloads are not required and carrying a nice light small frame gun is a pleasure!
