Bi-pod suggestions/opinions?

Anyone have experience with bi-pods good, bad or ugly? My son is thinking of adding one to his savage axis. I know zero about them. Any suggestions or personal experiences. I sure they add weight but that about it.

I hear caldwell is good... harris as well... I have a vanguard that has never let me down..... make sure it swivels....

Remember legs fold up toward the muzzle. I use them on a lot of rifles

If your son's Axis does not have a stud then be careful.
The "loop" for a sling which is part of the stock will not take the stress.
Harris bipods can be serviced free of charge by mailing to Kentucky and they pay the return postage. Al others are "recycled" . . . never to be returned!
All of my hunting rifles carry a Harris and right now there are probably more Harris' than rifles.

I have the champion pivoting traverse bipod on my .204. Mine extends to 23" and I can.t remember the minimum( maybe 12" but not sure) and it has been good. You will likely need to stiffen the forend on the axis to use the bipod to full advantage.

Don't cheap out on bipod - get a Harris at a minimum. I found the LONG legged ones handy for hunting - you can shoot while seated, and also in deep snow.

Harris also carries a long list of adapters for different applications. Best bet is to get the plate/stud combo that is designed for AR15 forends, and inlet it into whatever stock you want with epoxy.

Just google'd the axis - looks like it has a front stud.

The Champion pivot traverse is great value, but the Harris carries "the name". I've not used mine enough to break any of them......

The suggestion for a long legged one for hunting is a good one. My hunting one is a harris 12"-25". I can shoot prone at 12", or use it sitting/kneeling at 25" to get up out of the snow and grass.

I have a Vanguard Equalizer on my Axis (223) that I use for yotes.

I think I paid about 75 bucks for it - the model I have is suited for prone shooting.

It (bolted up) well, seems sturdy, is not causing any issue (so far) being fastened to the front stud (factory one on the Axis).

No where near top of the line or bargain basement. I compared it against the Champions and Caldwell's (at the same price point) and the Vanguard "looked" superior.

I've only ever used the Harris for field work. Why frig around with some budget bipod when the good ones are quite reasonably priced?

I'm the guy who always buy one step better than I think I need, but if someone's on a budget a 65$ champion might me a better choice that a 140$ Harris.

I wouldn't be caught dead with one of these things mounted on a general-purpose hunting rifle, but I like bipods on varmint or predator guns. I like the Harris as well, the taller one as mentioned above that allows for shooting from a sitting position.

I also have a couple of Versa Pods along with a bunch of adaptors for them. They attach and detach much more easily for me than the Harris ones, so I don't walk around with one on my gun, but they can be snapped on instantly if wanted.

For most hunting, if I think I might need to carry along my own rest instead of improvising something in the field, I prefer a BogPod or a set of Steady Stix over anything that is actually attached to the gun.
