I'm interested in learning more about biathlon guns and equipment such as the back pack straps. What makes and models are popular with beginners? General resources, thanks

Well, the "standard" biathlon rifle is the Anschutz 1827f which uses the Fortner action. Nordic Marksman imports these rifles and also stocks a lot of biathlon equipment. They are a site sponsor. Check out their site.

The other biathlon rifle is the Izhmash, which I believe is a russian rifle. I have no idea where you would get one in Canada.

Anschutz is coming out with a beginner's Biathlon rifle based on the 64 action, which will be cheaper than the Fortner action.

Nordic Marksman is the place you want to shop.

As for the also excellent Izhmash russian rifles, check with Teapot2 if he can still get them, he used to.

Interammo in Edmonton might still have the Izhmash 7-3 or 7-4 biathlon rifle. I have a 7-3 and like it, forget about the women/man thing if you're under six feet tall. The rifle shoots super tight groups at 50 m off the bench with SK Std+ and Lapua Biathlon ammo, less tight with HR at 120+ after skiing a few kms. Mine came with harness and arm sling, and was about half the price of the Anschutz. Nordic Marksman has parts for them, too, although I haven't needed any.
