Now I am no Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett, but I do know a big bear when I see one. I drew a Bull Elk tag this year in WMU 406 and was only able to hunt for it one day. Me and a buddy took leg to the foothills, and likely covered around 12km seeing pretty country and everything but the intended quarry. It was a little warm and, we likely should have headed for higher ground if we intended to see any bulls.
Anyway we made it back to the truck with about half hour left before sundown, and I needed to drive to BC first thing in the morning so we headed out. Long story short my buddy spotted a big blackie on the ridge above us and I didn't have a blackie tag, but he did. He didn't have a centerfire (he had his .22 for chickens), but I did. I had just gotten this rifle from Supercub in a trade and I, without second thought
, handed it to my friend and said lets get'em. We came over the backside of the ridge, and my friend put a 140gr Accubond (.270 WCF) into the bear head on to us at 42yds. The bear hit the
deck and rolled down the hill sideways, never twitching once, as in dead right there. We later recovered the bullet after it had smashed four neck vertebra, angled through three ribs, and back up to smash through 5 more vertebra and then about 8 inches of fat and rested under an inch of fat beside the hide. Wicked penetration.
We rolled the bear down the hill whole to the ditch. This is when we found out we had a big bear on our hands. I can dead lift a full grown mule deer into the back of my truck by myself. I stand 6'4" and weigh 260lbs, and I don't spend much time in the arm chair if you get my drift. My hunting partner is probably 5'11" and 190lbs. We barely got that bear 6" of the ground....
We rolled the bear back up the hill, backing my truck into the hill, then rolled the bear down into it. The next one we will be skinning on the spot. Anyway, this was about Oct. 6? I think. Here is the one picture I have. Go ahead and guess the score, I'll let you know who is right when the taxidermist is finished with the skull.
