What's everyone loading in their big boars (.40+) this year?
I've switched back to 405 gr jacketed flat nose over 55 grs of varget for my 4570 this year for bear just curious what others are using

In the .458 Win Mag I'm loading 78 grains of A2230 in Win brass under the 450 grain A-Frame and 76 grains of the same powder under the 450 grain Barnes Banded Solid. I'm using the round-nose but not by choice, its all that's available now.

This load data is only for the truly fearless, all others should work up carefully.

did you ever try rl7?

If I get a chance to get out for bear I would like to try the 43 Mauser with 370gr cast backed with a full case of blackhorn 209.

110 gns of IMR 4831 under a 500 gn Woodleigh soft flashed up by a CCI 250 magnum primer, chronographs at 2160 fps and places 4 shots into 1 1/2" or less at 50 mtrs.......................THE .470 NE.

264 gns of H50BMG under a 647 gn Barnes TSX boattail with CCI primer chronographs at 3005 fps and places 3 shots into 1/2" or less at 200 mtrs......................................................THE .50 BMG

Can't remember the loads for my .416 Rigby, 40-72, 40-82, 3 different 45-70s, 45-90 and 45-110, sorry.

I was going to try hard cast bullets from the bullet barn but I just don't have the time to find a good load before bear season so I'm using jacketed Remington 405s

New Ruger #1 in 458 Lott for me this year. Can't wait to hammer down some bears and moose with Hornady 500 gr. SP at 2300 fps behind 84 gr. of IMR 4320!
Awesome load.
Cheers

What may I ask do you plan to hunt with the big 50 bmg? Just doesn't seem much like a "Carry all day" Tule of gun lol

I use H-335 in my .458.
- 76 grs under a 500 gr Interlock for 2100 fps
- 74.5 grs under the DGX (cannelure is farther ahead) for 2100 fps
- 77 grs under a 480 gr hard cast WFN for 2200 fps

These compare favorably with Federal's factory .458/500 TBBCs, that clocked 1977 fps, not so far ahead of a heavy .45/70 load. All loads were chronographed from my 21" M-70.

I've got some 500 gr Matrix that Marshall has redesigned, but I haven't loaded any yet, but will soon. Hey Dogleg, a few years back you convinced me to buy some A Frames. I got some 500s from Ray'ner Shine, but apparently some guy from Saskatoon bought up all the 450s he had. Probably just as well, they cost so much I can't bring myself to load them anyway! I just need a special occasion I suppose.

Out of my Steyr 450 Marlin BB, i am pushing a 400 gr Speer with 52 gr of H-322 at 2045 fps, this is a real thumper... JP.

You are quite correct Brybenn, at 34 lbs it's certainly not your ultralite mountain rifle. However here in the Yukon we have an interesting hunting opportunity where one can see 10,000 caribou on an expansive tundra valley where an open 1500 mtr shot is absolutely doable. If an animal is inadvertently wounded it cannot escape from sight, and follow up shots are guaranteed. This area is accessed by a major road, the Dempster highway, and we can then use snow machines once in the area of the migrating herd. This all assumes the weather co-operates and pushes the herd through the region which it has not for the past few falls.
What I intend to do is snow machine out to a small hill and get all set up and "benched" in with a good ground matt and possibly a tent, facing west as this is the direction from which they come. Spotting scope and military 2500 mtr laser rangefinder and the select a bull hopefully in the 400 inch or better class and do my best to harvest him between 12-1500 mtrs. Will not shoot in the wind and will have my settings all figured out from 1000 mtrs, every 50 mtrs to 1500 mtrs and will have a spotter.
You know what they say about "Best layed plans" though...................If this doesn't work out I'm sure I can hit one at 250 mtrs anyway......and we are allowed 2 each. I'm sure my kid will really want to try it as well so we may have some exciting action.
To you nay sayers, that this isn't hunting it's just killing, or shooting animals, may I say that when harvesting the barrenland caribou it is NEVER a difficult hunting experience. Just select your bull from the warmth of your truck, step out and into the ditch and lay him down at 50-100 mtrs is the norm out there, when they come through. I'm actually adding some sport and skill to the equation as zero skill level is required otherwise. I have been close enough to a 390 inch bull to have taken him with a spear, never mind a handgun or bow. It is just something I wish to add to my hunting resume, cleanly taking an animal out beyond a kilometer with full intent and minimal luck involved.
