Good day ladies and gentleman,

Let's start a Recipe book for everyone to post their winning recipes in 338 lapua/federal/ ETC

First and foremost, there are a few things that need to happen here for this post to be successful.

1: We need to stick to a pre-established format.
2: We only post recipes. No congratulations, questions or any other posts than recipes.
3: Questions or congrats to posters about certain recipes to be directed via PM so it doesn't clutter the original post with things other than recipes.

One very important thing, a recipe that works in a firearm may not work in yours. When the recipe is HOT (close or above recommended amount of powder), work your way up to it. . This is serious stuff. It can cause catastrophic failure of your firearm or hurt you or someone. We are mostly all grown ups, let's use our heads if the recipe is hot. WORK UP TO IT.

Here's a format that seems to make sens.

Caliber:
Rifle brand:
Rifle Model:
Custom built:
Barrel length and twist:
Projectile brand, model and weight:
Powder brand and weight:
LOAD CONSIDERED HOT OR CLOSE TO MAX:
Primers:
Coal:
Ogive length:
Brass:
Brass length:
Distance to lands:

Results at 100, 200, 300 (whatever is available)

If available:
Velocity (average):
Outside temperature:
Wind and direction:
Barometric pressure and other relevant data:

Thank you very much everyone and let's make this a successful post for everyone that are getting into reloading a new caliber or are lost in the amount of options available in this caliber. This will also be awesome for anyone who's looking for a start point or simply improve their own recipe or try something else. It will also tremendously simplify the search and the amount of time spent on the search button option and the read through the hundreds of posts and irrelevant reading someone will have to go through in order to get a start point!

We all know that something that does wonders in someone's rifle may not work in someone else's rifle even if it is the exact same thing only a few different serial number away.

Once again, thank you everyone for your participation in this recipe and let's make it a go to for anyone who needs it.

I haven't been running any high performance testing on velocities or whatever have you, but I can relate what I find comfortable and gives me reasonable accuracy with two hunting loads.

- Caliber - . . . . . 338 Winchester Magnum
- Rifle Brand - . . Winchester
- Model - . . . . . . Pre-64 Model 70
- Barrel - .. . . . . 25"
- Scope - .. . . . . Leupold VX3, 3.5 - 10 x 40

- - Two Hunting Loads:

1st:

- Brass - Winchester
- Powder - IMR 4831 - 73.0 Gr,
- Bullet - Hornady Spire Pt. - 200 Gr.
- Primer - CCI - 250 Mag.

2nd:

- Brass - Remington
- Powder - IMR 4350 - 68.0 Gr.
- Bullet - Hornady Spire Pt. - 250 Gr.
- Primer - CCI - 250 Mag.

These are hunting loads and as such I spend the time to properly sight in and fine tune scope adjustment to eliminate as much mechanical error as possible. . Shooting from a bench with only a front barrel rest I shoot groups of 3 then allow the barrel to cool and run a cleaning patch through the bore . . I'm not satisfied until I obtain 1" groups of 3 at 100 yds.

I finally found the winning recipe with my Savage 110 BA Stealth in 338 Lapua Magnum during a load work up this morning.

24 in barrel
Factory 20 MOA rail
Minnox ZA 5i HD 5-25x56 SF TAC
5R 1:9.3 twist

Hornady 285gr ELD MATCH G1 BC: 0.829 G7 BC: 0.417
Lapua brass
CCI 250
89.5gr of H 1000

5 shots group @ 100 yds

1- 2767 fps
2- 2771 fps
3- 2768 fps
4- 2775 fps
5- 2773 fps

es: 8 fps
avg: 2771 fps

grouping was 0.755 in

temperature -7 celcius
very light breeze (less than 5 km/h)

I will go long range shortly since I found my load and speed, I freaking can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!

* I only shot this one at 100 meters on paper, but holes easily touched for just under .75 MOA. I took 1-2 minutes between shots to keep the barrel reasonably cool and to tighten up my fillings between rounds.

If available:
Velocity (average): 3150 fps (five shot average)
Outside temperature: 5 degrees Celcius
Wind and direction: n/a
Barometric pressure and other relevant data: n/a

Caliber: .338 Winchester Mag
Rifle brand: Ruger
Rifle Model: M77 MK II
Custom built:
Barrel length and twist: 24", 1-10"
Projectile brand, model and weight: 250 gr. Nosler Partition
Powder brand and weight: 68 gr IMR 4350
LOAD CONSIDERED HOT OR CLOSE TO MAX: I would say close to max.

Coal: fits in magazine and chamber.
Brass: Remington
Brass length: New

If available:
Velocity (average): 2700 fps.
Outside temperature: Can't remember, but warm.

I hated this particular rifle ( no problems with the calibre) and ditched it before doing a lot of load development and group testing.

Cartridge: 338 Winchester Magnum
Rifle Brand: Tikka
Rifle Model: M65 Standard
Barrel length/twist rate: 24" 1-10"
Bullet make and weight: Nosler Accubond 225 grain
Powder charge; 67.5 gr IMR4350

Muzzle velocity: 2,715 fps
Temp: 20 Celcius

Moderate load, very accurate, 5 shot group just under 1"

.338 Lapua AI, chambered by EM Precision
Custom Defiance Deviant tactical
29" 1:9.35 twist Krieger
300g Lapua scenar
Hodgdon Retumbo 97g
97.5 was a hot load and primer pockets were getting loose after multiple firings starting at 4x on Hornady brass no problems with Norma brass trying Lapua bras, looks fine.
CCI magnum NO. 250
Coal. 3.670 still testing distance to lands but this is my start point with room both ways.

You can safely load a max Retumbo load (I assume this is true for all powders) for 338 Lapua for fire forming as the load is significantly reduced (94g). The max Lapua load is accurate but slow, mine groups just about 1/2 inch low at 100 yards.

Would anyone care to post some for 45/70... Marlin Guide Gun use...moose season coming up

Update:
Well I'm a new reloader so, I guess I will start....first time loading 45/70

Caliber: 45/70 Gov't
Rifle brand: Marlin
Rifle Model: 1895 Guide Gun
Sights: Bushnell Legend Ultra HD scope, 1.75-5X32mm
Projectile brand, model and weight: Jet Bullets (Gunnutz handle JetHunter) 425grain cast, gas checks
Powder brand and weight: Dominion D4198 - Canada Ammo house brand
LOAD CONSIDERED HOT OR CLOSE TO MAX: No
Primers: Dominion large rifle primers
Coal: 2.483"
Brass: Winchester, new
Brass length:2.100
Lee Factory Crimped

I'm new to 45/70 so I found it a bit tough on the shoulder for me wearing only a t-shirt while shooting off a bench with sandbag. I took a few standing shots and it was better...should be more comfortable with a hunting coat on.
I started at 36.5grain of D4198 and loaded 5 rounds each increasing by .5grains. This was the best group.

Results at 100 yards

Caliber: 45-70 Gov
Rifle brand: Marlin
Rifle Model: 1895GBL c/w Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5*32
jlHWO7ql.jpg

Projectile brand, model and weight: Sierra #8900 - 300 grain JHP. Seated into the cannelure with a solid crimp from the Lee factory Crimp Die
- I'm going to use this bullet for deer hunting - Hunting a bigger/tougher game animal boar, bear, elk or moose will need a different bullet to ensure penetration.
Primer: Winchester Large Rifle
Brass: Federal
Powder brand and weight: Hodgdon H4198, 55.0 grains
LOAD CONSIDERED HOT OR CLOSE TO MAX: No, but ATM it's my Max.
Load Data comes from Hodgdon 2017 & 2018 Annuals
- H4198 55.0 grain - 2221 fps, 60.0 grain - 2424 fps.

I had a 10 shot Average of 2154 fps, Standard of Deviation of 15.7 fps and a 5 shot group size around an inch @ 50 yds while testing this load.
- The brass was not hard to eject, but the Winchester Large Rifle primers moved and I can see where they are starting to flatten out, but they are not totally flat. This Federal brass had been reloaded about 8 times before, this load being the heaviest. Next round of reloads will be with some new Starline Brass.
- Not for the recoil sensitive. Shot off my bench using a weighted Lead Sled during load testing. If my calculations are right, this load has around 3000 ft/lb of energy @ the muzzle.

I use the Lee 45-70 3 piece Die set along with the Lee 45-70 Factory Crimp Die.
I use the Lee Universal Decapping Die to knock the primer out, then I clean primer pockets, then clean the brass in the ultrasonic cleaner before I do a full/neck resizing, it helps to keep the crud out of my reloading dies. After sizing, the brass is cleaned again to remove sizing lube and once dry the brass gets polished to a brilliant shine in a corn cob tumbler ;). A TIP I read to keep the corn cob media dust out of my brass is to add a fabric softener sheet cut in small squares to the media. The sheet attracts, captures and holds the fine dust particles.

Here is one no-one has posted for .375 Weatherby Mag.

Caliber:375 Weatherby Mag
Rifle brand: Remington
Rifle Model: Rem 700 LA
Custom built: Fully trued and accurized
Barrel length and twist: 26" #5 Benchmark 1/10" twist
Projectile brand, model and weight: Barnes 270 gr. LRX
Powder brand and weight: Hogdon H414 - 84.5 grs
LOAD CONSIDERED HOT OR CLOSE TO MAX: Room to move yet but accurate as is
Primers: Fed 215
Coal: 3.640"
Ogive length: 2.911"
Brass: Weatherby
Brass length: new brass
Distance to lands: .050"

Results at 100, 200, 300 (whatever is available)

If available: Has shot 3 round groups into .201" @ 100 yards but normally will hold under .5 MOA (absolute hammer on Elk and Moose). Have shot it out to 650 yards and rifle will hold under MOA out to that distance.
Velocity (average): 2950 fps
Outside temperature: 20*c
Wind and direction: N/A
