Big Game Calibers...

The minimum for moose is a .338, a 30-06 will do it under ideal conditions, a 270 might do it if everything else is in your favour, a 25-06 might do it if its your lucky day. Use enough gun, a moose is a big animal.

have you ever shot a moose? or did you just finish reading a Craig Boddington article?

LOL...:D

Yeah, I must've been way undergunned with the moose I shot since I've never even owned a .338... :p

The many moose I have killed with an old 30-30 or 303 Brit were just as dead, just as fast, as anything I have ever shot with any "magnum" cartridge, LoL Moose don't know #### about marketing! ;)

have personally seen 9 moose fall down. .308win, .30-06, .270wim, .300mag, 7mm mag and .458 mag.

the only difference in the way they died was meat damage. Moose don't need a magnum.
Anything will work! If you make the shot count, However if you got the goods in the Medicin cabinet why not use them?
If not than use what you got and make the shot count.
In Europe the 6.5x55 is very popular cartridge to use for moose hunting, I just perfer my Magnums, thats why i bought them to use ! With a quality bullet.

Amphibious I guess this is a good thing that we have so many caliber cartride combos that will work we can argue about them LOL!
My first was with a 30-06 . And your right it fell just as dead as any will at 50yards

The thing that i do not get is all the time we talk about the min cartride to use WHY do we do this? LOL cause we can I guess

 GOOD GOD MAN!

In the 308, 30-06 class I would want at least a 180 gr "premium" bullet.....I would say you want a nosler partion or a barnes-x bullet (others may have a special pet bullet and I'm sure most premium bullets are good).....some have had okay luck with "standard" bullets but I have heard of many failures too.....I use 180 gr Noslers in my 300 mag.....i tried barnes x and my gun would not group worth a darn.....I have not heard good things about sierras and ballistic tips on moose......
I get maybe one or two chances at a bull and the few extra cents a shot is well worth the price....180s have NEVER let me down......

JasonYuke and I share many of the same thoughts. 6.5x55 is a very popular calibre in Europe, especially in the Scandinavian countries for moose. On that thought, I have killed moose with a .264 Win Mag and considering people in the high North use a .243 for polar bears, this calibre is more than enough especially if you do your part.

I personally believe that moose hunting is best performed with a .30 cal of some sort, a good 180 gr bullet can do this job very well.

I load a ton of 165 grain game kings every year for guys that will shoot nothing else in the 308 calibers, and 160 grains in the 7 milimeter calibers.
Some like the HPBT, some like the SPBT, and only 3 in the last 5 years has needed a second shot.
Ranges are anywhere from 40 to 300 yards.
Some bullets were recovered, some were pass throughs, none chewed up the meat anyworse (many less) thanm premiums.
The recovered bullets are usually about 110 to 140 grains.
Everything from a .22 rim fire up to a .500 BMG will kill a moose.

With that said anything from a .270 with premium bullets up will work well, just put the bullet through both lungs.

If given only one choice I would use a 30-06 with a quality 180 grain bullet.
Bingo has been called.
