I have a remington 870 with a 26" barrel I use mostly for Duck of Geese and I also have a 12.5" Barrel I bring on my silly bush expeditions incase I run into a not so happy bear.

I'm looking at doing some Deer hunting next year with some fellows from work and my question is; would I be alright getting a cantelever rifled barrel or should I invest in a new gun all together for deer? I have a remington 700 tactial long range in .308 that is supped up for long range shooting and is sporting a 26" barrel so it is a little heavy and long to be hauling around in the bush as well as teh 6-24 power scope is a little over kill for the ranges I will be hunting deer at.

If your hunting deer under 100 yard get a slug barrel either with iron sights or scope and have fun. if longer ranges are involved either your rifle or something easier to carry around. Third option both.

I have taken deer with my 870 over the years but nothing over 100 yards.
If I know I am going to be in thick brush I will normally take the 870 but when hunting open fields etc the rifle.

I've used my 870 for years and have shot quite a number of deer with it. I use a smoothbore slug barrel with sights and have used Challenger slugs for sometime now as well as 00 buck.My hunting is done in thick bush and a 40 yard shot is a long shot where I hunt. With the rifled barrel and cantilever mount with a scope you should have no problem hitting a deer at 100 yards. Why not treat yourself to the new barrel for your 870 and a new rifle to go along with it ?? Cheers Bac4
