Hello guys, and gals,

I'm gald I've found this website it's exactly what I was looking for and it's Canadian too!

Well here is my situation. I'm looking to buy another rifle (I have a Marlin 336SS .30-.30) and I have come across what I believe to be a great deal. But I'm not sure about the caliber.

The gun in question is a Blaser Offroad (Synthetic) R-93 in .300 Rem Ultra Mag, that has only fired 1 box of ammuniton, along with the quick release scope mount and rings.

I plan on hunting throughout Canada and possibly the States (deer to Moose). My concerns are barrel life, though the barrels on Blaser's are replaceable and interchangeable, as I've read that magnum barrels last about 1000 rounds. I also wonder if this cartridge is just a waste off powder. I place much more emphasis on shot placement than on killing power and don't necessarily want or need this much energy. I plan on shooting 300 yards maximums.

Any advice would be great.

How much does a rifle like that sell for :?: Probably expensive :!:

E-bay is full of take off barrels from RUM rifles. Why is that :?: I personally think the UltraMags are too much of a good thing. I wonder why the gun in question has only had one bos of ammo through it. Recoil is heavy, ammo is expensive, and most people realize that they would be just as well served with a 30/06 or even a 300WinMag.

A nice Sako in 300WinMag would be my choice before that Blaser

"...magnum barrels last about 1000 rounds..." That's nonsense. Magnums do wear out faster than a non-magnum, but not in 1,000 rounds.
The biggest problem with the Ultra Mags is the high cost of ammo and brass. The dies aren't cheap either. Plus availability in small places. If you get off someplace remote and left your ammo on the kitchen table you may not be able to pop into Crappy Tire and buy more. Then there's the felt recoil. .308 or .30-06 is everywhere.

It's a nice rifle for sure, but the 300 RUM wouldn't be my first choice.

Mind you, you could always find another barrel for them..that's the beauty of the R93.

What's the price?

The gun belongs to a store owner who frequently gets new guns, and that is the reason for only one box of ammo passing through the barrel. This was his gun for the season and now that his hunt is over he's looking to sell it. I happened to be in the right place at the right time to get a price from him. he seems like a very nice guy and I trust his word. The price is not cheap but neither are Blasers in general. I love the gun but am not sold on the caliber for said reasons: ammo cost and availability, excessive power. I'm not too worried about the recoil. The price is $2300 for everthing but a scope. According to the owner this is below his wholesale cost. I know this is a lot of money, and I'm not rich by any means, but I figure I'm 25 years old and this would be my lifelong shooting companion so I might as well get one I really like.

I guess I could always sell the barrel and magnum bolt to finance their replacement.
By the way this would be a private sale so no tax either.

The problem is that if I was to buy an R-93 in the caliber of my choice it would have to be a new gun and that would cost approximately $3600 (R93, proprietary quick detach mount, rings, and those dreadful taxes). There are significant savings to be had buying this rifle used if I am willing to compromise on the caliber. Alternatively I could also sell the barrel and get the one I really want ... but to find a buyer!

Thanks a lot the discussion so far; it is really helping out. Don't hesitate to contribute.

E-bay is full of take off barrels from RUM rifles. Why is that

One reason is that anyone building a custom 300ultramag needs an action to do so.People like myself simply bought a factory 300ultramag rifle(2 in fact) to obtain the action and the factory barrel and stock were sold to offset the cost of buying the rifle.

The biggest problem with the Ultra Mags is the high cost of ammo and brass. The dies aren't cheap either.

Actually the remingon 300ultramag brass is not overly expensive when bought in bulk.It costs roughly $40 per 50 pieces compared to $20 per 50 pieces for the 30-06.At 5 loadings per brass that works out to a difference of $20 per 250 shots or $.08 per shot.As for the dies, russells sports sells the RCBS 300ultramag dies for the same price as 30-06 dies. The 300ultramag does cost more to shoot, but not as much as most people would think.

All of that being said,if you are only going to shoot 300 yards at most and your only other rifle is a 30-30,you will never be able to take advantage of the flat trajectory and high energy that the 300ultramag offers. As such, this would appear to be a poor choice for your situation.

I'd pass. That is not such a great price. Consider Epps is selling a new one for $2649. Where are you from? I think a .300 WM or Wby would satisfy all of you requirements. As would a .300 WSM.

Plus there are other rifle+scope combos in that price range that may serve you better.

Thanks for Epps.
Yeah they have the R93 Offroad at $2650 but with tax that's $3G's, and then I'd still need a base and rings. The price of $2300, all in, still sounds good to me as that's at least $1000 off ... which is the equivalent of a very nice scope!

That used Weatherby is a mighty fine gun and seems like a good deal but I'm not crazy about fluted barrels or muzzle brakes.

Italian Sporting Goods in Vancouver has a used Mauser 99 in .300 WBY for $1100 (or $1200, I can't remember), those are absolutely top notch rifles. They came with a 1/2" 3-shots at 100 yard guarantee.

BUT if you really want a Blaser, then go for it. There are some who think it is over-engineered and too complex. The Europeans love them, but they also hunt differently than we do here.

As much as the 300ultramag is a poor choice for your uses, the 300wby certainly isn't much better.Recoil and barrel life is very similar to the 300ultramag.The 300winmag or 300wsm would be much better choices.

I bet that thing kicks like a mother $%^&*()

You can get a very good rifle, fully set up with a good scope and rings for $2300.

If I had $2300 to spend on a rifle, I'd find a custom one here on CGN, in a cartridge like 30-06/280/7RM, somethign like that...
