As stated in the thread title, I seem to have a BIG problem with my SKS.

I have installled a Tapco stock on my SKS, and I now have a huge problem...
I was trying to install the Tapco top guard (on the gas tube) and this means that I must drive out a pin to remove the wooden guard. Well, I couldn't get that damned pin out, so I gave up and tried to reassemble my rifle.

I cannot get the gas tube to seat, nor can I get the gas tube lever to move into battery (where the rifle is safe to shoot). The lever stubbornly remains at the 10 o'clock position (viewed from the right side) and I cannot get it into the seated position.

I have removed the gas tube many times before this (and the original wood stock on the gas tube is intact) and this time, I had to smack it into position with my hand (usually it all but fell into place). Also, I cannot remove the gas tube from the gun now.

Should I take it to a gunsmith or is there something else I can do??

I'm really leaning toward the gunsmith option right now.

Any useful help is greatly appreciated.

This is a common problem and has happened to many people before including me. When you were trying to remove the hand guard you distorted the front gas tube mount. It is a matter of looking and fitting with sometimes a little grinding to make it fit again, then touch it up with cold bluing.

no need to take it to a smith . most of the sticking problem i encountered can be simply be remedied by these following steps.

1. rifle upside down about a foot of the floor, left hand holding the muzzle and right hand grab the top HG with palm facing up, bring the right hand down to tap the butt on the floor a few times and the top Hg would come off.

if that doesnt work than do the following.

2. remove the stock and place the rifle on a vise upside down and then use a block of wood place on the underside of the top HG near the rear and gently tap with a hammer .

Well, after following bjs7293's and Curtton's advice (mucho gracias amigos) the tube finally went back on and the lever is in battery.

I didn't bother trying to replace the top Hg, so the original wood piece is still there. I don't give a damn because all this SKS is for is a shooter. I don't care what it looks like:p

Then why buy the stock

Pistol grip feels better than traditional grip

weather resistance

maintining original stock condition

additional length to the midget sized stock..

storage in pistol grip

Rails for accessories

Sorry to inform you but there is more to adding features to your firearm than "LOOKS" ..way more actually/
hope that answered your cynical question enough to drive you back into the hole which you emerged from
:jerkit:

Buy a $2 can of black paint, paint the upper HG to black, I did that on my Norinco SKS 14 years ago. Same problem at the time, replaced the stock but couldn't get the wood out of the upper HG.
