what's out there that could/would fit those requirements?

I was talking to an RO last Saturday who talked about a guy shooting the .458 Win Mag using some donut shaped shotgun powder moving a 500g bullet at about 2000fps and it's recoil was quite light.

what else do people shoot that's big n heavy but light recoil?

The info isn't quite right.

There is no Shotgun powder extant that will move a 500 gr bullet at 2000 fps in a 458 Win Mag at sane pressures. Maybe "about 2000 fps" means 1300 fps?

Regardless of powder used, I'd never describe recoil as light with a 500 gr bullet With a MV of 2000 fps.

I own a 458 Win Mag.

I'm assumin what he meant was a guy shooting a 458 with cast bullets and trail boss powder.
The velocity of such a load would be around 1000 fps though.

Recoil is a bit stiff with the 500gr bullet launched at 2000 fps - that's about the standard speed for this round. If I load my .458 Win. Mag. down to .45-70 Trapdoor speeds (~1200 fps), recoil is a lot lighter. That's just physics.

there are two ways 500 gr and 2000 fps don't = heavy recoil...one is a very heavy rifle the other is a very obnoxious muzzle brake.

500gr/2000fps would be between 55-60 ft/lbs of recoil....that is well above the unpleasant region. Around 3 times a really hot 30'06 load with 180's.

that's funny stuff in the OP. it reminds me that not all ROs are as expert as they let on regarding guns. he's talking near factory load velocity in an elephant gun. compared to a 460 weatherby he may have a point. i got a chance to shoot the 458 wm with 500's in an unscoped model 70 about 6 times in arow back in the 80's.left me with a flinch and some memorable bruises. now granted i didn't hold it right according to what the big bore guys have said, but it knocked me around a bit.

perhaps I've mixed up a couple of details from the conversations that day. :p

but yes, .458 Win Mag and Trail Boss. said it was loaded to the top and had very light recoil. :)

If a heavy bullet goes pretty fast, there WILL be recoil. Laws of physics don't get violated very often. Every action creates an equal and opposite reaction. A 500 grain bullet going 2000 fps cannot be done without the level of recoil of any other rifle that produces that velocity with that bullet mass. Whoever is describing the load as having little recoil knows nothing about either shooting or physics.

A 500 gr with Trailboss is a popgun. My 25 grain load of 4759 and a 530 is sort of a +P popgun in my .458 Lott (and happens to be my blackpowder equivilent in my 45-70) Good fun and feels like its free to shoot. By contrast my 450 grain A-Frame load at 2400+ and 84 grains of 4320 is in a whole 'nuther world. :)

what kind of velocities do you have with the 500gr and Trailboss, Dl?

From the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook I would guess a muzzle speed of around 1000 fps in the .458 Win. Mag. using Traiboss and 500gr bullets.

If I'm going to play with 500gr bullets in my .458 Lott (my standard load is the 300gr TSX or 300gr HP at 2700 fps), I load it at 1800 fps using a compressed charge of Reloder19 in .458 Win. Mag. cases with the bullet seated out as shown so that the bullet is close to the rifling when chambered (I really don't want to risk cracking the stock of my Sako .458 Lott rifle by firing the 500gr bullet much faster than that ).

I've found that a 500gr bullet at around 1800 fps MV is fast enough for stomping moose out to 100 meters or so.

Trail boss will get you down on recoil and speed but a 500 gr woodlieghs round nose at 2200 fps is fun. Most ppl who swear they're recoil proof shoot it once hand me my gun back and I give them a rag to wipe the blood off.
I love my 458 wm. So much in fact I want another one and a 2" version as well

I get 1300 fps. with 500 gr. Hornady FMJ on top of 34.0 gr. of IMR4759 and a tad over 1400 fps. with 30gr. of same powder under 405 gr. Bullet Barn hardcast in my Winchester M70 .458 & they be accurate and pleasant to shoot.:)

Biggest cartridge heaviest bullet lightest recoil (shoulder fired I presume?) would probably be the 84mm Carl Gustaf. Felt recoil is pretty low...concussion from the muzzle blast might make your nose runny and clear your sinus's though! There are some nice 235gr loads for the 375H&H that are effective hunting loads but with fairly light recoil.

Just get yourself a beat up .50bmg, then weld about 150lbs of scrap steel all over it.

Big? Yup.

Fast? Yup.

Recoil? Like a drunk kitten.
